Writer, golfer and historian (FRHistS) my latest book has just been published "St Andrews: Camelot of Golf". Great fun pulling together lovely images & words!
@TheGolfDivoTee And this man never made it to The Masters despite being responsible for the PGA over-turning its Caucasian-only clause. #charliesifford
@Steve_DiMeglio@harmanbrian Get well Steve. About a year ago just before The Open you wrote a brilliant article about St Andrews & I used your superb Ogilvy quote. I can happily send you a copy of the book & maybe you can give it a little nudge in return? Nigel
@GolfLibrary Harrington has been talking about many top golfers having hot, short periods of 2 or 3 years. Sporty, Jason Day, Rory? It’s an interesting idea and doesn’t apply to everybody but seems to have some merit.
@lornerubenstein Yes, to play great golf in perpetual torrential rain as the Open leader on Day 4 is a major, Major achievement & he was truly in a league of his own.
@ShankingShots@bullpen24@FormbyGolfClub Interesting & important that the nearby greens held up so well during the similar deluge at Hoylake. Do we know why?
.
@SHistorians@TheOpen Another respected golf emigre from St Andrews who did (golf) missionary work in England. Huddersfield GC (below R) was his first posting in the great English golf boom He was only the second Hon Member at the New Golf Club after Old Tom #standrews
@TheGolfDivoTee Very good. I also love this photo past his Grand Slam. Findlay Small Douglas, son of a carpenter from St Andrews, who was USGA President at the time is the other guy #usga and #bobbyjones
@TheGolfDivoTee Peter Alliss- the only golf commentator to receive an Hon Degree from the University of St Andrews. Might be able to see him on stage behind some other famous names getting an LLD. Can you name them?#TheOpen
Tom Watson as 5X Open winner never had the chance to play Hoylake in his pomp to become Champion Golfer. He’s our current Hon Member at the New Golf Club & Old Tom was the first. #TheOpen and #tomwatson and #oldtommorris
@cookiejargolf @SProctorGolf @RLGCHoylake Played the Pod today driving home from Hoylake. Excellent but I think we need an adjective to put in front Stephen Proctor‘s name to reflect his phenomenal grasp of golf history. Suggestions?
Hoylake: Bobby Jones was very fond of the course making his first & last British appearances in tournament golf at RLGC. Aged a very young-looking 19 when he started at the Amateur and only 28 when he finished As Champion Golfer #hoylake
@SHistorians@TheOpen@WorldGolfMuseum@RandA And the year before he showed how much better the pros were than the amateurs when he finished 21 shots of his mentor, patron & friend, James Ogilvie Fairlie, the leading amateur.
