In India, higher educational institutions almost never acknowledge caste discrimination within their own campuses. They will go to any length to shield the accused faculty and protect the institution’s image. That is precisely why, in the feedback I submitted on the Rohith Vemula Act, I strongly argued for replacing the internal Equity Committee with a fully independent District-Level Anti-Discrimination Committee (DLADC) sitting outside the university chaired by a retired judge and based in the District Collector’s office so that inquiries cannot be suppressed by the very institution being investigated. IIT Bombay is no different.
