This is probably the most useful piece of advice you can give people not just for picking political candidates, but for personal relationships. Bad behaviour is clustered, people are what they do, not what they say, and almost nobody is "on a journey".
I do loathe all the stuff about how you have to use AI or you're going to be left behind. If it's going to be that disruptive, then there's probably not much that you can do. And also there's no skill involved in using it. There's no learning curve. Can always pick it up later.
One of the most constant responses to Deciding to Win has been people saying that the Democratic Party has already tried moderating.
I think it's important to understand that this is not true.
The Democratic Party is a lot more left-wing than it used to be!
I also think people should try to conceptualize this in their own lives.
If you're a highly educated liberal, would you vote for a MAGA congressman just because they promise earmarks? Or would you prioritize your own substantive views on issues like reproductive choice or democracy?
Now just try imagining that the way you feel about democracy and abortion is how a lot of working class voters feel about immigration and crime!
Can't buy votes. Have to speak to people's actual views!
“Climate [change] is an evil thing in that it’s caused by rich countries and high middle-income countries and the primary burden [falls on poor countries]. When I looked into climate activists, I said, Well, this is incredible. They care about poor countries so much. That’s wonderful, that they feel guilty about it. But in fact, a lot of climate activists, they have such an extreme view of what’s going to happen in rich countries — their climate activism is not because they care about poor farmers and Africa, it’s because they have some purported view that, like, New York City, can’t deal with the flooding or the heat.”

New newsletter for you today on the Catalist report, considered the gold standard for election modeling. This took some work, but as I crunch the numbers, it suggests that persuasion rather than turnout was Democrats' big problem in 2024.
It's crazy that people lost their mind of Nancy Pelosi's husband buying $NVDA call options -- which literally everyone in the world was doing over the last few years -- and here is Fox Biz reporting that Wall Street execs are getting early alerts on trade negotiations.
FWIW, this is a big part of why I am pedantic about stuff like "most Americans live paycheck to paycheck".
Not only is it false (America is a rich country, most Americans are rich and have liquid savings) but it also is a narrative that pushes people to be more selfish.
It seems like the way to test this would be to run some explicitly degrowth candidates in blue or — even better — purple or red districts and states.
It's pretty easy to field candidates in primaries, more ideologies should try it. Polls tell you a lot less than elections.
Could not agree more with @AJentleson here:
“In politics, winning elections is the moral imperative. You go into this business to change people’s lives for the better. That means changing policy, and to change policy you have to win.
Those who would rather lose elections so that they can feel better about themselves leave the real suffering to the people they claim to fight for. No one wins when we lose. It is time to start winning again.”
Please let this be true today:
“There was always just enough virtue in this Republic to save it; sometimes none to spare, but still enough to meet the emergency.” —William Seward, Secretary of State during the civil war.

Pope Francis to children in Singapore: "All religions are paths to reach God. They are—to make a comparison—like different languages, different dialects, to get there. But God is God for everyone. If you start to fight saying 'my religion is more important than yours, mine is true and yours isn't', where will this lead us? There is only one God, and each of us has a language to arrive at God. Some are Sheik, Muslim, Hindu, Christians; they are different ways to God."
i don't know how to explain to people that politics never stops, reactionaries will always exist and you will never secure a permanent victory where your ideas are unchallenged
Progressive advocacy groups like Sunrise have zero demonstrated capacity to successfully mobilize voters.
What they actually can do is generate bad press for Democrats, helping Republicans win elections, and using the threat of this to try to extort policy wins.
There’s a widespread belief among America’s elite, backed up by the defense bar, that white collar crime is fake and it’s essentially unsporting to prosecute it
