45+ years ago, the United States opened its arms and welcomed my parents onto her soil. After their birth nation fell to a coup, America granted them their inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. She did not guarantee them anything, but She did give them a chance to pursue the American Dream.

For 45+ years, my parents have called America their home. They remind me regularly that if it were not for America, where would they be? Their gratitude naturally rubbed off on their eldest son. Yet, it was not until I was older that I truly understood how blessed I am to be born an American.

James D. Hornfischer writes of Seaman First Class “Bud” Comet:
He reminded his son of his own beginnings. Born in Italy, the senior Comet was raised under the worst of political systems. He had come to this country and managed to make a living and provide for his family. What this meant, he said, was that America was worth dying for. Death would be acceptable, so long as it was honorable. “An honorable man dies once,” he told Bud. “A coward dies a thousand times.”

As I read the story of “Bud” Comet quoted above, I could not help but hear the voice of my mother saying: “the United States of America is the greatest country on earth”.

Growing up as a poor kid in Texas, I never imagined the things I have gone on to achieve. Yet, I am humble enough to realize these accomplishments would not be possible without three entities: God, my family, and the United States of America. America has her problems, but that doesn’t detract from the success of the American Experiment. When any entity has problems, we have two options: tear it down or work to improve it. I aspire to be a builder, not a destroyer. So, when my country called with a need for my skills, I answered the call. Who am I to say no to America?

Our founding fathers showed us that the inalienable rights of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness are worth defending. I proudly serve my country's Navy combat team with Honor, Courage and Commitment.

On a personal note, thank you to all the sailors who served alongside me the last few months. Thank you to our class officers, the toughest chiefs, and everyone who has served in the most lethal Navy in the history of the world. Go Navy!

If you have free time this weekend and need some extra motivation do the following:

1. Download the app LandGlide

2. Go to a neighborhood in your city you aspire to live in. The nicer the better.

3. Walk around. Look at all the amazing houses, the manicured lawns, the well paved roads.

4. As you’re walking open up LandGlide. The app will show you who owns the houses all around you.

5. Take their names and put them into google. Chances are Google will show who they are and pull up their LinkedIn.

6. Look at their LinkedIn. Virtually stalk them for 5 min.

7. Look at the following:
- how old they are
- how many jobs they’ve had
- where they grew up
- what path they took

By doing this you’ll realize the following:

- Most people you look up are older than you. Many much older. You have so much time ahead of you to get where you want to be, be patient.

- You’ll see how many jobs these people have had. There is no straight line to success. Try a lot of things. When you find something you like, stick with it.

- These people aren’t all celebrities or athletes. They’re normal working people. They were you at one point. You can be them too.

- If you’re looking for a career path to follow, look at what these people did. If any of these paths look interesting to you, there’s no shame in following what they did.

And don't forget, smell the roses and enjoy the walk and have a great weekend!
