David Ornstein’s recent comments are genuinely unbelievable. He said “Liverpool still want to recruit more players for Arne Slot this summer and that only after another transfer window can he perhaps be judged more fairly.”

How much more backing does a manager need?

Liverpool have already spent around £450 million in what was reportedly the biggest transfer window spend in Premier League history. They signed Milos Kerkez after he was arguably the best left back in the Premier League last season. They brought in Alexander Isak, one of the best strikers in world football, who outscored Erling Haaland last season. They signed Florian Wirtz, one of the biggest young talents in world football. They added Hugo Ekitike, who had the third highest goals + assists tally in the Bundesliga last season, and Jeremie Frimpong, an invincible Bundesliga and cup double-winning right back.

And that’s on top of already having players like Virgil van Dijk, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch, Ibrahima Konate, Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo. On paper this is quite easily one of the best squads in world football.

Yet the narrative is still that Slot “needs more time” and “more players” before he can be properly judged.

At what point does accountability actually begin?

Because if a manager needs the best player in the world in every single position before he can produce a functioning team, then what exactly makes him elite? The best managers can deal with injuries, imperfect squads, dips in form and difficult moments. They improve players, create structure and make the team competitive regardless.

And the biggest issue is that after 12 months, there hasn’t even been a single clear sign of progress under Slot. Nothing tactically suggests this project is moving forward. The substitutions continue to make no sense, the intensity has disappeared, the structure looks worse, and there’s absolutely nothing in the eye test that tells fans this will suddenly work if Liverpool keep throwing more money at it.

That’s why the situation with Xabi Alonso feels impossible to ignore. He is literally sitting there available, while Chelsea are pushing to get him. It feels like a perfect match for Liverpool in every way, stylistically, emotionally, culturally, in terms of his connection with the fans and the club itself, his tactical approach and ability to build structured, dominant teams, and the fact he’s one of the best managers in world football.

Liverpool cannot afford to miss that opportunity while continuing to blindly hope this current project eventually clicks despite showing no real signs that it will.
