How does a man CSIS ties to Iran's missile program keep scoring Canadian military contracts?
@StewGlobal reports that the Canadian government awarded more than $2 million in federal and provincial contracts to an Edmonton businessman using the name 'Sal Ghafouri' — actually Mohammad Reza Ghafouri Fard, son of a former Iranian vice-president — even while he was under a long-running national security investigation.
A declassified 2023 CSIS report alleges he worked as an engineer in Iran developing anti-aircraft missile and electronic warfare systems for the Iranian military and Revolutionary Guard (IRGC), and was part of a covert network that used a Malaysia-based front company to buy sanctioned components.
Despite these concerns, his companies Melanite Group and Radian Group won contracts from the RCMP, Department of National Defence, Correctional Service of Canada and others, and he was invited on a government trade mission.
Worse, CSIS also alleges that after becoming a Canadian permanent resident, Ghafouri met twice with Iran's intelligence ministry (MOIS) and was given instructions on how to handle approaches by Canadian or American intelligence.
This latest security failure proves yet again that the IRGC is a real threat to Canada's interests and Canadians.
