Your coach’s job is to coach you. That means praise when you’re doing it right; correction when you’re not. Don’t get hostile or defensive, shut down or talk back. Listen to learn. Listen to understand. It’s how you get better. Accountability will help you in the game & in life!
How you do anything in life is how you do everything. Name a player who’s late for class, disrespects their teachers/coaches/parents, never keeps their word, doesn’t complete school work, always has a bad attitude/excuse, but is otherwise a great teammate. Don’t worry, I’ll wait!
College coaches don’t invest in players they can’t believe in. If they make you an offer, you better know they’ve looked into everything about you. They may want you, but if they aren’t positive you can help their team AND keep yourself above board, they won’t offer you a penny!
Before you say you’ll do it, remember: commitment is a pledge. Not “I might”, not maybe. When you become a member of a team, you commit yourself to every practice, workout & game. It’s nothing more than your coaches & teammates expect & deserve. Nothing means more than your word!
Parents: You want your child to play, but if he/she isn’t, encourage them to compete hard in practice, keep a great attitude & be a good teammate. Don’t disparage others because of it. There’s no conspiracy theory. Sometimes the kids in front of them are just better at that time.
You are on the team, which means you are a part of something much bigger than yourself. At times, you will be on the bench. You have 2 options when you are sitting on the bench: you can either sit & just wait for your turn or you can be active & engaged in helping your TEAM win!
Effort is a form of respect. Not just for yourself or the coaches you play for, but for the game you play & for all those players who have come before you. Respect the game. Don’t slack. Don’t be indifferent. The effort you give is in direct proportion to the success you make!
Too many HS players think that being able to “get buckets” is the only ticket to a college scholarship. Far more important is knowing your role, perfecting it & executing it. Use your role to help your team WIN! College coaches want players who’ve carved a niche for themselves!

Self confidence
Leadership skills
Study skills
Optimism
Character
Coaches can pick captains, but they can’t choose leaders. Team captains who disappear during crunch time/when a game is on the line/when it matters most can never call themselves a leader. Be a game changer who takes a team to a higher level of play whether you’re captain or not!

Players have 2 choices: Either pout or prepare. Whether you play or don’t play, whether you win or lose, you will never regret working hard, making commitments, being disciplined or focusing too much. These skills not only prepare you for your game, but will prepare you for life!

Coaches often tell players who don’t play much or at all, to “keep working; your time will come” & it will. Usually when you least expect it. So players, when your number is called you better be ready. Keep putting in the work! You won’t cheat the process. It takes what it takes!
