Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, the day enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas were finally told they had been free for more than two years. It is a celebration of delayed freedom and a reminder that our liberation has never been freely given.

Opal Lee, often called the “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” walked hundreds of miles and fought to help make Juneteenth a national holiday. She did not wait for permission or ask for recognition. She laced up her sneakers at 89 years old and walked city by city, mile by mile, so that what our ancestors were denied would never be forgotten again.

Two and a half years. That is how long enslaved people in Texas were kept from knowing they were free. Opal Lee carried that history in every step she took.

We celebrate today because she refused to let this day be erased. Juneteenth is about truth telling, remembrance, and protecting the freedom our people bled for. That is the spirit of this day. That is the legacy we carry forward.

Say her name. Dr. Opal Lee, the Grandmother of Juneteenth. ✊🏾

This is Hunter Foster, the Senatobia, Mississippi police officer involved in the fatal shooting of 1-year-old Kohen Wiley.
On June 14, 2026, officers responded to a reported shoplifting incident at Walmart involving a box of diapers. Foster fired into a vehicle carrying Kohen, his mother, and another adult as they attempted to drive away, killing the toddler and critically injuring an adult. The family denies shoplifting and says they had a receipt.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is leading the probe, and Foster has been placed on administrative leave. Protests have erupted in the community demanding accountability and transparency.
A heartbreaking tragedy. Rest in peace, sweet Kohen. 🕊️😪

Today we honor the freedom, resilience, and strength of Black Americans — and the generations of civil rights leaders who marched and sacrificed so this country could live up to its own promises.

We cannot honor that legacy without speaking the truth: that freedom is under attack. The Voting Rights Act gutted. Black voters silenced at the ballot box. This is voter suppression in broad daylight.

We don't just commemorate the struggle. We CONTINUE it.
