Intel Royal Core is back!!!

And I'm surprised no one noticed!

All this time, rumors/speculations suggested that the Royal Core project spearheaded by Jim Keller was then cancelled by Pat Gelsinger. But evidence clearly indicates otherwise. Royal Core is very much alive and active. And might land in a Client CPU sooner than we think. All the pieces are coming together with unprecedented precision.

Intel calls them "Super Cores" in their patent EP4579444A1 (a.k.a Software Defined Super Cores or SDC). Previously, it was informally referred to as "Rentable Units" (based on some rumors). Now, it's officially called "Super Cores".

[History]
- SoftMachines (SMI) came out of stealth in 2014.
- Ian (@IanCutress) wrote a detailed article in 2016.
- Samsung & AMD were lead investors.
- Intel acquired SoftMachines in 2016 for US $300M.
- Jim Keller joined Intel in 2018.
- I think Intel filed a related patent in 2019.
- Intel filed a related patent in 2023 as well.
- Intel filed one more related patent last month.
- (There maybe more patents).

And yes. All those original SoftMachines "Virtual Cores", then the rumored "Rentable Units" and now the "Super Cores", they're all the same!

Simply put, a single Super Core is just a "virtualized" cluster of real cores. Or more precisely, a Super Core is a single virtual core that runs on top of a cluster of (SDC-enabled) physical x86 cores.

In HyperThreading (or SMT), a single SMT core executes multiple threads almost simultaneously. In a Super Core, multiple physical cores (in a Super Core cluster) simultaneously execute a *single* thread. Just amazing!

To be more precise, in a Super Core, a single thread is sliced into multiple "threadlets" and these threadlets are then executed in parallel seamlessly in a Super Core cluster which drastically increases IPC.

Thread -> x86 Instructions -> SDC Global Front End -> "Super Core" -> Threadlets -> Super Core Cluster -> Physical Cores

[Features]
- Original SoC had 20% area dedicated to the Super Core IP.
- Virtualization overhead is less than 5%.
- Threads can run in regular or Super Core mode.
- Supports hybrid P+E core architecture (but not optimal).
- Physical cores in a Super Core cluster have SDC interface (for syncing reg/mem).
- Makes HyperThreading/SMT obsolete (Super Core handles it).
- Intel Senior Principle Engineer Ori Lempel is part of the Super Core team.

The original SoftMachines claim was a massive +60% average IPC uplift for the first *additional* core, +30% to +40% for the second and +10% to +20% for the third. A Super Core cluster can have up to 16 cores max, but returns may diminish after 4 cores. Also, some performance claims seem even higher.

Chances of Nova Lake (2026) featuring Super Cores are slim, but possibility still exists. Titan Lake (2028) is expected to be a big change and there's a very high probability that we may see Super Cores in it.
