In the context of everything farmers & society have been told since 2017, this is insane.
Overnight @UKLabour has ejected the foundational principle that we need more nature & climate action across our landscape in favour of culture wars.

This evening the goverment shut the door for new applications on the new environmental scheme (SFI) that was supposed to be the replacement (if the farmer was environmentally progressive) of the old subsidies
Farmers can NOT now apply for new environmental support

The conflating of ‘farming’ and feudal aristocrats in this piece is breathtakingly daft - a genuinely progressive land policy is possible but it isn’t this budget

In today's @ObserverUK, @williamnhutton takes aim at @Historic_Houses for pushing back against the inheritance tax changes in the Budget.
But our argument is about the effect on heritage, which is too rarely mentioned in this context. (1/9)
"The Reeves budget is more than an attack on farming, it is a full scale assault on entire rural communities..."

OK, here's my APR plan, which will fix *everything*, guaranteed.
IHT relief on Agricultural Property [AP] is scrapped. When someone who owns AP dies, there is full IHT due on the value.
However, the AP can go onto a register, which means the tax is deferred indefinitely.
@NicDakin55 Nic, the APR proposals will harm owner-occupiers and tenant farmers, and not just their landlords (despite Mr Reed's rhetoric). I've written to you separately at greater length than social media allows - please pass your rural constituents' concerns on to the Chancellor.

Yes, and given the havoc wreaked by the budget on that "other" big land use, I think this a major win for forestry. If you are a tenant hill farmer you'll be eyeing your landlord very warily
I don't imagine any of the major countryside organisations will be very happy with this, though I can see a wildlife trust buying that land tied down in covenants/106s for a song.
Between the cap/reduction in agricultural property relief and its extension to environmental scheme land, this budget looks a lot like one for the Green Lairds. Sell the carbon/ biodiversity/etc attributes, move the proceeds, benefit from a lower IHT base.
