One reason I was able to hoard GPUs in middle school was this, despite living in Pakistan, the prices were not just locally stable, but also internationally, which ceased to be the case when GPU use for crypto mining became popular around 2017-18, when I stopped collecting GPUs.

Although AI uses a graphics accelerator's ability to draw shapes using maths & geometry, however as someone from CS, I consider crypto mining using GPUs a corruption of the idea of graphics acceleration. GPUs are meant to draw squares & triangles, not cause a global market crash.

AI tech grifters have completely distorted the basic concept of a graphics accelerator. It's supposed to accelerate (supplement) the CPU's ability to show graphics, simple.

This is the 2011 Timex T2N501 my sister got for me as a gift for my matric result. We still have its original receipt in the drawer with my grandfather's 1987 Citizen watch that I plan to have restored later this year. Last I got it refurbished was in 2018.
