The world today is like a huge boiling hotpot.
This Chinese social media post applies “hotpot geopolitics” to what’s been called China’s muted response to the war in Iran.
The post by Du’ergou 都二狗 is a reply to the question “Why doesn’t China provide military aid to Iran?” (Zhihu, 4154 answers). It was later reposted on WeChat and other social media (sent to me by Miranda). Translation by me:
“The world today is like a huge, bubbling hotpot. The pot gets hotter the longer it simmers; those who jump in are risking their lives, while those sitting at the table are calling the shots.
🇵🇸Palestine is like the hotpot soup base: it has been in the pot all along. It has been cooked the longest and suffered the most. Everyone is fishing around in the pot, yet nobody truly treats it as a proper dish.
🇺🇦Ukraine is the potato that’s been overcooked. It was the first ingredient to go into the pot, and it’s been boiled until mushy. When you try to pick it up, it falls apart, yet people on the side of the pot are still throwing in more ingredients.
🇾🇪Yemen, 🇸🇩Sudan, and 🇸🇴Somalia are like glass noodles that have been cooked until they are nearly invisible. No one notices them, no one picks them up. They sink to the bottom and dissolve as the world pretends not to see.
🇷🇺Russia is the fishball. It’s been in the pot for ages. Its skin is thick and tough; it won’t fall apart no matter how long you cook it, and it just keeps rolling around in the pot. Anyone who tries to grab it will burn their hands.
🇲🇲Myanmar is the tofu that cracks open in boiling water. It’s already soft to begin with, and once cooked, it becomes full of holes. The longer it simmers, the more it falls apart; and the more it falls apart, the more chaotic it becomes.
🇮🇷Iran and 🇮🇱Israel are the fresh sliced beef rolls just dropped into the pot. As soon as they hit the boiling water, they curl up, instantly making the whole pot boil even more violently, with the smell of meat and blood mixing with the aroma rising from the pot.
🇦🇫🇵🇰The Afghanistan–Pakistan border is the tripe that was just thrown in. It had been lying by the side of the pot, but suddenly got pushed in. Bobbing up and down, it will soon be thoroughly cooked.
🇺🇸The United States used to sit at the head of the table with long chopsticks, in charge of tossing ingredients into the pot and grabbing food — never touching the pot, never burning its mouth, and always choosing the tastiest bites — but recently it has also jumped into the pot.
🇪🇺The European Union is the guest who came along for the meal but doesn’t dare dip their chopsticks too deep into the pot or leave the table. They are afraid of the heat but still try to follow the best bites.
🇰🇵North Korea is the small kid who grabbed the chili powder. He hasn’t tossed it into the pot yet, but the spice in his hand is intense. If he gets nervous and throws it in, everyone at the table will start coughing.
🇯🇵Japan is the squid that has been cooked until it’s stiff. It curls up and hardens the moment it hits the hot broth. It may look ‘al dente,’ but it has actually long been boiled out of shape. It doesn’t dare go onto the plate, and it’s too afraid to sink to the bottom of the pot, so it just curls up and floats in the broth.
🇰🇷South Korea is the frozen tofu that soaks up the soup, yet it’s all someone else’s soup, and it doesn’t have its own flavor. Pick it up slightly, and it falls apart. Fortunately, it hasn’t gone into the pot yet.
🇹🇼Taiwan is the plate of Chinese cabbage waiting to go into the pot. It is just sitting there peacefully, but there is always someone trying to throw it into the boiling pot.
🇨🇳China is the one watching the pot and controlling the heat. It doesn’t take the initiative to throw ingredients into the pot on its own, nor does it randomly jump in. When the fire gets too strong, it lowers it; when the pot is about to overflow, it steadies it. It won’t let anyone flip the pot over.
Oh yes, 🇮🇳and there’s India. But everyone is afraid it might stir shit into the pot, so no one wants to bring it along.”
Wait, so the founder of Anthropic is "Amodei," as in "loves god"?
And he leads Anthropic, meaning "human-centered," which is being used in military strikes?
And the creator of ChatGPT is "Altman," as in "an alternative to humans"?
And he leads OpenAI, which is completely closed?
And then there's "Gemini," meaning "two-faced," from a company that promised to do no evil?
And the whole global AI arms race is being driven by people who claimed to be worried about AGI taking over the world?
