SOWORE BEING SENT TO PRISON: A DANGEROUS REGRESSION FOR OUR DEMOCRACY

I have received, with deep concern, the news of the court’s remand of citizen activist Omoyele Sowore in Kuje Prison.

While the judiciary remains the ultimate arbiter of justice, we must consistently guard against any trend that gives the appearance of state institutions being weaponised to systematically stifle dissent, muzzle the press, or shrink the legitimate space for civic engagement in Nigeria.

A thriving democracy does not survive on the silencing of opposing voices; rather, it is anchored on the robust protection of fundamental human rights, most notably the freedoms of expression and peaceful assembly, as enshrined in our Constitution. Moreover, our society is already strained by insecurity and biting economic hardship; therefore, deliberate steps should be taken, even by the courts, to avoid inflaming the situation.

When we begin to treat citizen critics, activists, and journalists as threats to state survival rather than as partners in building accountability, we signal a dangerous slide toward authoritarianism. Our current challenges, ranging from economic strain to internal security vulnerabilities, require inclusive dialogue and cohesive nation-building, not the incarceration of those who demand a better society.

I urge the relevant authorities to ensure that the rule of law is strictly adhered to, that Mr. Sowore’s constitutional rights are fully protected, and that our security and judicial institutions are used solely for the impartial administration of justice. We cannot build a New Nigeria if we continue to undermine the very democratic structures meant to protect us all. -PO

Last week, I went to visit a family friend at her shop, and while we were talking, she called her 7-year-old daughter to get a bottle of Coke from the fridge. The little girl grabbed the bottle, slipped, and dropped it. The bottle shattered everywhere.

As I got up to ask if she was okay, she immediately got up, ignored the broken glass around her, ran out of the shop, and started crying. Her mother was livid. She called her back into the shop to face the consequences and yelled some hurtful words at her.

I helped clean up the mess and asked the child to stay outside because her mom was so upset. Then I asked the mother why she was so angry. She said the girl was too playful. I told her I had been watching and that the child wasn’t playing at all; she simply slipped and fell.

She repeated that the girl was always too playful. I acknowledged that she might be, but that wasn’t why the Coke dropped. I saw what happened: it was clear that she slipped.

I then asked her to try to understand the difference between a child being playful and an accident happening. After all, she could have dropped the bottle, too, if she had slipped. I reminded her that while our children can sometimes be playful, accidents happen, and they are still just kids.

We shouldn’t beat or punish them for every mistake. Sometimes, we need to talk to them instead.

Imagine being so afraid of your parent that you run over broken glass just to avoid being punished. What if she had slipped again and gotten seriously hurt? All over a mistake that could happen to anyone.

I understand that parenting is hard and can be exhausting, but we need to stop taking our frustrations out on our children. It’s not okay.

She was quiet for most of the conversation because I was upset, too. Later, she wanted to use food as a way of apologizing, asking her, “Come here, I know you are hungry. What would you like to eat?” but I insisted that she talk to her daughter instead. I wanted the child to understand that it was just an accident and to hear from her mother that accidents happen.

Sometimes, that’s what children need most, not punishment, but understanding.

So, my fellow parents, please and please and please. These kids are just kids. Their brains are just developing, and they need our help, support, and guidance through these stages. Do not blame and punish them for everything.

VDM stood right in front of the army and police blocking the Ministry of Defence and told them the truth they didn’t want to hear.

That’s what makes this different. He didn’t just confront the system... he reminded the men holding the gvns that they too are victims of the same system they are protecting.

The real problem is not the men in uniform. It’s the system that puts gvns in their hands and turns them against their own people.

To the men in uniform, there is still time to wake up. Because one day the uniform will be gone, the salary will stop, and you will return to your villages to face the same poverty, the same bandits, and the same insecurity you were used to shield others from.

That day, you will remember this moment and ask why you didn’t do the right thing while you had the chance.

I watched your interview last night, and had to allow football sweep a little bit of the emotions (read negative energy) that was already all over the place here.

I like to think that referring to Obidients as ‘so called’ was rather out of pocket, and I believe in your wealth of experience, you realized that, hence the pause afterwards.

H.E sir, also I find it underwhelming and unnecessary that you said the presidential flag bearer of your party, H.E Peter Obi, wasn’t doing you or your party any favor by running. To be honest, that’s like placing a loaded AR in the hands of the leading party before election campaign proper. Totally avoidable sir.

I didn’t even know there was a protest at your residence by 2am over primary election results. Very unfair to you and your family I must admit.

H.E sir, please remember the goal is saving Nigeria. Please remember millions of Nigerians sees you as the vehicle that will drive one (with his very able running mate) who we truly believe will rescue the dwindling nation. Do not allow emotions ruin this even before we start building sir.

I have noted with grave concern the escalating wave of insecurity that has engulfed our beloved nation. Once again, Nigeria is bleeding profusely. From Zamfara, Borno, Sokoto, Katsina, and Kwara to Oyo and several other parts of the country, our citizens can no longer sleep with both eyes closed.

Banditry, kidnapping for ransom, terrorism, communal clashes, and armed robbery have tragically become daily occurrences. What is most alarming is the audacity of these criminals, who now brazenly hold live sessions on social media to taunt the authorities and terrorise the public.
This is totally unacceptable and not befitting of a sovereign nation like ours.

As someone who has served this country at various levels, including as Governor of Kano State and Minister of Defence, where we confronted and significantly reduced security challenges through decisive leadership and community engagement, I remain convinced that insecurity is not insurmountable. What we lack today is not resources, but the requisite political will and sincerity to confront this menace head-on.

The current approach has clearly failed. Despite massive budgetary allocations to the security sector, the situation continues to deteriorate rapidly. Innocent lives are being lost daily, families are displaced in their thousands, and our economy is suffocating under the heavy weight of fear and instability.

We cannot continue on this dangerous path. Nigeria’s security architecture requires an urgent and comprehensive overhaul.

Additionally, to safeguard our socioeconomic wellbeing, the government must prioritise the provision of quality education, modern infrastructure, accessible healthcare, reliable electricity supply, and essential agricultural inputs. This approach will strengthen local food production and reduce over-reliance on imports for food security.

We must immediately prioritise the welfare and motivation of our gallant security personnel, strengthen intelligence gathering, enhance community policing, and, most crucially, tackle the root causes of this crisis; poverty, mass unemployment, and poor governance through massive investment in quality education, skills acquisition, and job creation for our teeming youth. - RMK

Media Framing of Crime Along Ethnic Lines: Divisive.

As an Igbo man, I have endured stereotypes, judgment, and labelling solely based on my ethnic origins. This is not an isolated Igbo experience. Most Nigerians have, at some point, been reduced to their ethnicity rather than recognised for their true character.

I understand the pain of the ordinary Fulani man today, often unfairly judged by the actions of criminals he does not support, has never met, and who are not representative of his people.

Even in America, such unjust labelling fueled the civil rights movement and prompted Martin Luther King Jr. to declare that people should be judged by the content of their character, not the colour of their skin.

Every Nigerian ethnic group is known for its unique traditions, occupations, skills, and strengths. Crime, however, has no ethnicity. A thief is a thief. A terrorist is a terrorist. A kidnapper is a kidnapper. They are bad actors, not representatives of any people. They must be identified, arrested, and punished according to the law.

We must decisively abandon the dangerous practice of blaming entire ethnic groups for the actions of a few criminals. It is unjust, it breeds hatred, and it damages our national unity.

Let us proudly celebrate our diverse cultures, talents, and contributions, rather than falling prey to stereotypes and prejudices that politicians and divisive interests exploit for their gain.

A new Nigeria must emerge—one where no citizen is condemned because of tribe, religion, or birthplace. We can cherish our cultural roots while standing united by justice, mutual respect, and hope for a better future. We are capable of this.
