also i want to add that
our main criticism of Raya is that it attempted to mesh 11 countries at once. it's unrealistic to pressure us to do the same when we already stated that's its impossible to do. also people need to reconsider the contributors' safety more.
Bringing up how D*sney's European fairytales "aren't accurate either" when SEA people are criticizing Raya isn't a fair equivalent.
How many other adaptations are there of Beauty & The Beast? Snow White? Pinocchio? How many SEA stories are out there internationally? Not a lot.
just read a book review where the reader said they didn't like the desi representation because the parents were shown to be supportive of their teen daughter and the reader couldn't relate —i don't know but maybe we should stop equating representation with relatability.
I'm seeing the "queer people need to be more CAREFUL about how they express themselves" discourse beginning earlier in some spaces this year, so this is your reminder that queer people don't need to be role models to exist in public spaces.
As #PitchWars is ending, I just wanted to do a master-list of all the mentorship programs that are out there. If you know of another one, please feel free to tell me and I'll add it onto the thread.
There is this dynamic I describe as "the white people chairs problem."
If that phrase already has your back up, maybe take a deep breath and come back later and consider reading some replies before you add to them.
The rest of you, buckle up. We're doing this thread.
The best is when you have to differentiate between generations. Lola Baby, Tita Baby, Ate Baby. And then multiples because of course there’s never just one. Lolo Boy from mom’s side vs Lolo Boy in Pangasinan, etc
Filipino nicknames are a trip bc I asked my mom what my Tita Baby’s real name was and it was Baby but when I asked her what Tito Boy’s real name was, she didn’t know, and my grandpa answered “…Florante”
