"The definition of insanity is failing to research your attribution over and over and expecting anyone to know who said the damn thing." - Abraham Lincoln, Mark Twain, Jesus, Marylyn Monroe, Albert Einstein, and of course Wilgiam Shaksbier... whose name had no concrete spelling.
In Dutch: So, AFAIK, US usage dwindled, at least. According to etym. sources, "Dutch" = bad/confusing because the English were bitchy about Dutch people... Thing is, it so feels like CRS to me... But it's "double Dutch", not "Dutch double"...which would be "Barney Rubble" anyway.
@lateralcast Absolutely fair! I mean, even though QI will get updates to Sandy during the record, they can still get stuff wrong sometimes, and that's with a whole TV-budget team.
It was a fun research trip, though, and now I'll be able to use the word "dint" comfortably!
@lateralcast listening to Episode 103, had to go on a half hour research journey... It seems "dent" and "dint" go back to proto-germanic, while the "dent" in "dental" "indentured" and "mastodon" go back to Latin, although "mastodon" has some Greeky stuff...?
For the record, in case that seemed callous or disrespectful, I very much still remember 9-11 There's a reason it replaced Pearl Harbor as a day of infamy, as it was a horrifying intentional event which killed a hell of a lot of people. I also remember the racism which followed.
Donald Drumpf (Trump) was hundreds, even thousands of times more effective at killing innocent Americans than Osama Bin Laden. We don't need to forget 9-11, but we should also remember how incredibly catastrophic incompetent narcissism has proven to be.
More than 40 minutes, that was... Just dumped the whole interstate to one lane, ending with a turnoff right before a regular service stoplight. I mean, I procrastinate a lot, but I wouldn't procrastinate if I had to plan a highway closure diversion.
So, San Antonio is wasting billions of dollars and doing this bullshit, just so there can be a little less traffic around 1604 and I10 for maaaaybe as much at five years... If they're lucky. (research induced demand if you don't know what I mean.)
@jimmycarr I'm listening to you talk about being a lapsed catholic in your stand up. Isn't stand up your job? Does that make you a pro lapsed catholic?
Still, good to see that priests are branching out, at least.
@daraobriain I feel like the audio and recording didn't help, but also I think the high's still there, but your voice has a broader spectrum now... Also, "repoot"?
I'd comment on more of ILJTY, but I'm relying on peg-leg sources, here. I'd gladly buy season/series 1 for that episode alone, but I'd love to be able to stream it or rent more current seasons. (obviously not up to you, but at least one more rando's pointed out the obvious now.)
@jimmycarr A rare few episodes of You Bet Your Life are so funny I can't believe they came out when they did. S1E2 of I Literally Just Told You must be that same anachronism for decades from now.
God fucking damn it! I slept through another eclipse because my life is an eclipse... Send me pics, but wait at least a week. Give me time to mourn, so to speak.
For anyone interested, I have a blog of writing and photography. I finally played The Beginner's Guide, and I decided that (for me) I'd rather let my writing disappear on its own, rather than with my help. Anyway, here it is! https://t.co/pZdbDgfcoH
@England Please put to a vote, the matter of changing Big Ben's (St. Stephen's Tower or whatevs) name to Bigothy Benson. Thank you. If you are not all of England, but a football club, can you please explain what an offside rule is in imperial, metric, and American football.
