NHS SACKED A CEO FOR TRYING TO SAVE CANCER PATIENTS. THEN LOST IN COURT.
John Watkinson ran Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust (@RCHTWeCare). In 2008 he raised the alarm about the care of gastrointestinal cancer patients. The Trust suspended him the same year. By April 2009 he was out.
The dismissal process was so bent that an employment tribunal said it flew in the face of any concept of fairness. The appeal process got an even better review: a travesty of anything approaching basic concepts of fairness. Both phrases. From the same case. About the same NHS.
Watkinson won his unfair dismissal claim. The Trust appealed. They lost that too.
The Secretary of State for Health ordered an independent review into why an NHS chief executive got fired for whistleblowing.
The review found the South West Strategic Health Authority had been putting pressure on the Trust to push through a reconfiguration of upper GI cancer services and Watkinson was in the way.
He had obtained legal advice saying the reconfiguration required public consultation. The SHA did not appreciate that.
So they got rid of him.
NHS has a speak up culture. They put it on posters. Right next to the door they show you on the way out..

Never ever ever consider paying fees for a trust to ‘protect’ your assets from tax or care home fees https://t.co/sB91Cj3AI3 the only people who make money are the scammers who sell it to you and your children will pay the price.

During the COVID-19 pandemic NHS staff faced an extraordinarily difficult challenge.

@ITV I was deeply affected by the issues raised in #BREATHTAKING. The best advice, I believe, is to vote out these Conservatives and never let them ‘govern’ again.
Dental sepsis.
Oral cancers.
Official indifference to NHS dentistry now has a body count.
What more will it take for this Government to wake up?

People pulling out their own teeth with pliers.
Millions unable to access basic care.
Access problems aren’t inevitable.
They are the direct result of choices made in Westminster.
