I don't know why a lot of people are surprised that many Chinese Indonesians still speak their own variants of Chinese at home. Maybe it's a rare thing in Java, but in places like Bangka, Medan, Singkawang, Pontianak, etc., they still speak & teach their children to speak their languages. You can watch videos on the Internet if you don't believe me

Problem is, when they go to places like Malaysia, Singapore or to PRC, some Mandarin speakers accuse them of being "disconnected" from their roots because they don't speak Mandarin (i.e. the Putonghua). This is what I was criticizing; Their ancestors who came to Indonesia did not speak Mandarin in the 1st place; They did not come from Mandarin-speaking regions, so it makes no sense to say that they're "disconnected from their roots" because they do not speak Mandarin?
