For families who’ve waited years for a home, today changed everything. @UNHABITAT ED, @AnacludiaRossb1 & @The_DHS Minister, @ThembiSim73 visited Kennedy Road, eThekwini, where houses were handed over, part of the city’s urban agenda. Tomorrow, @UNHABITAT🇿🇦 opens its doors here.
“Through common human effort, injustice can be overcome and that together a better life for all can be achieved.” – Nelson Mandela
Lasting change is never the work of one person alone. It is built through collective effort, shared responsibility and a willingness to act for the common good.
Madiba’s words continue to speak to a world facing deep divisions and inequality, reminding us that the possibility of a better life rests, in part, on what we choose to do together. Mandela’s legacy challenges us to move beyond inspiration towards action—and to recognise our own capacity to contribute to a more just and equitable society.

Throughout August, we’re looking back at some of the remarkable women who have taken the stage as Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture speakers, reflecting on the ideas and leadership they brought to these important conversations.
We begin with @Malala Yousafzai, the 2023 Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture speaker, whose lifelong advocacy for girls’ education and the rights of young women continues to challenge us to consider what becomes possible when people refuse to be silenced.
As she said: “When the world is silent, even one voice becomes powerful.”

Mandela disrupted an international order that had become comfortable with injustice. And perhaps that is the Mandela we most need today.
We often celebrate reconciliation as though it were Mandela’s defining gift. It was not. Justice was. Reconciliation was never his starting point, it was his destination. His starting point was justice.” — Redi Tlhabi

Today, the Nelson Mandela Foundation is also partnering with the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, the United Nations in South Africa and the Graça Machel Trust to launch Thando and Fredy’s Big Adventure with Tata Madiba, a children’s book that brings Nelson Mandela’s values to life for a new generation.
Inspired by the spirit of Ubuntu and aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the book reminds children that kindness, courage, respect and fairness are not just values to learn about, they are values to live.
