The United Kingdom produces enough food for 60% of its population.
The other 40% comes from the rest of the world. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh. Countries that will feed their own people before they worry about anyone else's shelves.
And right now, the Strait of Hormuz, the single chokepoint that 30% of global fertilizer passes through, is closed.
Globalization felt like a permanent solution. It was always a fragile one.

Sounds like Reform could well be the largest party on Birmingham city council (Richard Tice at count).
Does this now mean it’s ’based’, rather than a poster child for civic breakdown?
People seem very confused about “digital ID”.
It is not the same thing as carrying ID cards that people have in the EU. It is a wholly different beast.
It means you have a number. An identifier. Your ability to do anything can be turned off by the government at any time.
Whether that is taking a flight, buying something on Amazon or sending a parcel.
Whether that is looking at the internet, opening a bank account or accessing the NHS.
In the EU, we are rapidly moving towards a digital ID. The EU is pushing companies like Amazon to require it to make purchases or Facebook to “verify” your account. Right now it is voluntary and works mainly across government agencies - healthcare, mail service, tax authorities. But in due course it won’t be voluntary.
It does absolutely nothing to stop illegal migrants from entering the country or working in the black economy.
Digital ID for every adult is not progress. It is the end of a free society dressed up as convenience.
I am a cyber security specialist. This is my take.
They are selling it as a fix for illegal migration. That is bollocks.
We spend hundreds of billions a year on cyber security and yet the volume of breaches is breaking records. The threat is growing faster than the spend.
Digital ID will not stop boats. It will not stop trafficking gangs. It will not fix a broken border.
Criminals will work around it.
Honest citizens will pay the price.
It builds giant data banks that track where you go, what you buy, what you read and who you speak to.
It links your identity to every checkpoint in daily life.
One breach and your life is exposed.
Look at Jaguar Land Rover and the airports in recent weeks. Now imagine that at national scale on an ID system tied to everything you need to live your daily life.
Here is the risk that ministers will not admit.
Ransomware seeded through a supplier or an insider:
It lies quiet for months. It rolls through the backups. On trigger day the register and the recovery sets are both encrypted.
Payments fail. Health and benefits stall. Borders slow. Citizens are frozen out until a ransom is paid or the state rebuilds from scratch.
Centralise identity and you centralise failure.
Do not fall for the pitch.
Function creep is certain. It starts as login.
It becomes access to money, travel, speech and public services.
It turns rights into permissions controlled by the state and its contractors.
It creates a single point of failure for criminals, insiders and hostile states to target.
It will punish the elderly, the poor and anyone who is not always online.
It will centralise risk and outsource blame.
It will not stop fraud.
It will not stop illegal migration.
It will build the machinery for a social credit system by stealth.
If ministers cared about the border, they would enforce current laws, resource patrols and processing, close loopholes and remove those with no right to stay.
You do not need a national ID to do any of that.
We scrapped ID cards in 2010 for a reason.
Britain does not need a central register to prove age or status.
Yes to privacy first proofs. No to a database state.
This is nothing to do with mass-immigration. It’s been a plan since Blair was in charge and his tentacles are all over this too. This is Starmer’s next step in creating a totalitarian Britain. It will do nothing to stem immigration—it’s an excuse for a pre-planned monitoring op.
On the Reform position regarding flags: the Dorset flag is fake, it was made up and voted for in 2008. If they want to ban it, fine. It's the end of history in canvass.
Time to return to the flag of Wessex.
Luciana Berger, Thangam Debonnaire, Marvin Rees, David Evans, Mike Katz.
All are being made unelected legislators FOR LIFE by Starmer.
The hallmark of this country’s next serious government - whenever that is - will be abolishing the House of Lords.
It’s a national joke.
Graham Thorpe, England cricketer, with beautiful daughters, loving wife, family and friends.
Took his own life.
Too many men in particular, at a time when information is plentiful, charities on standby, text, phone and email services ready, are deciding to end their lives.
Many reading this, like me will have hit very close to where Graham got but stopped short, just. It's a desperate, confusing and frightening experience mixed with a matter of factness that at the time feels sobering, you feel you're thinking and acting clearly but you're not.
Graham's wife took the decision to tell the world of how Graham both lived and sadly died, in the hope that if you or someone you know are struggling you'll grab one of the branches set out below and contact someone who can and will help.
When someone takes their life, there's a trail of pain, questions and few answers, but many of us know that anxiety and depression gets so bad that life simply doesn't feel worth living. In my case I was lucky, very lucky. I ran, and ran some more until clouds lifted, the anxiety moved away and I could think straight. Looking back I've been seconds away from death several times, so reading about Graham is incredibly confronting, upsetting and sobering as I'm sure it is for many.
I didn't know Graham but his story is all too familiar. Anxiety and depression for men, particularly men, hides invisible as the forced machismo creates a mask, a shield. You laugh, you crack a joke, you "look" ok and you carry on. But then one day as if you were preparing a meal, you take stock, prepare your deed and,
You take your life.
Leaving others with a lifetime of pain.
You don't mean to, it's the last thing you want, but it's the unintended consequences of a decision made, nonetheless.
If you're reading this, and can relate to any of the above, firstly have 5 minutes to think of Graham, his children and his wife, they need all the love and support that can be sent their way.
Then, if you're anxious, depressed, really struggling, ease know that my email is open to sound off, that charities such as the Samaritans are there 24/7, SANE charity phone line is open from 4pm to 10pm daily, MIND have drop in centres nationally and emergence services will always help on 999 or NHS 111.
To Graham and his family, you're on my mind and the mind of many, and to those struggling, you're a second away from help even in your darkest hour.
Protect life. Yours.
Stand up. Speak out.
🚨 BREAKING 🚨
Following last nights assault on the Holiday Inn Hotels in Tamworth and Rotherham which caused residents and hospitality workers to flee for their lives, the Unite Hospitality Combine - our national activist network - has put together the following statement: 🧵
In 1977, after the National Front terrorised black and asian communities, the Anti Nazi League was formed along with Rock Against Racism which 100,000 white, black and asian Britons attended.
It's time sports figures, entertainment, music and industry figures did the same.
Remember those words scrawled on the wall – "FUCK PAKIS" – whenever a pundit or a journalist tries to make out that this is all a misguided expression of legitimate concerns about immigration.
I finally caught up with the inspiring @LeanneMohamad
The far right and shameless politicians can try all the Islamophobia they like, but no one is keeping these Muslim women down!
Glad to see the evil Illegal Migration Act will (hopefully) be overturned under Labour.
But on brand for Starmer this is one step short of the finish line. Surely the best way to clear the asylum backlog is to make the process accessible from overseas in the first place?
Labour will:
Crack down on smuggler gangs.
Clear the asylum backlog.
Strike return agreements with safe countries.
Reform legal routes for refugees.
13 years of Tory failure has let criminal gangs off the hook and left thousands of asylum claims unprocessed.
