I’ve noticed that student curiosity and questioning has grown because of explicit instruction. When students have a foundation of knowledge, they then have something meaningful to wonder about. Knowledge doesn’t suppress inquiry. It fuels it. We have to know before we can wonder.

The refusal to enforce real consequences doesn’t protect kids; it sets them up to fail.
The real world doesn’t hand out endless second chances.
Whoever it is, parents or teachers, if you don’t teach accountability when they’re young, life will do it later. And life can be a far harsher teacher than you.
Want your kids to remember history or science for years?
Use Retrieval Practice—simply ask what they recall after a lesson, video, or book.
I DON'T mean quizzing them: "Who was Henry VIII?"
Just ask: "What do you remember"
Recall tells the brain that what they heard matters—so it's worthy of keeping. The more retrieval practice they do, the stronger their memory will become.
In my learning club of 6-10 yos, this one shift boosted history recall from 10-20% for the littles to 80%—with zero extra studying. Bonus, they loved it because they NAILED our trivia game - their favorite part of history days
It’s low effort, high reward, and turns learning into a playful game♥️
I really worry about the humanities.
Modern English classrooms have replaced deep reading comprehension with “reading strategies.”
Instead of grappling with the complexity of a text, students are taught to scan and skim, searching for the main idea or surface features.
This will not result in a love of literature, as it trains students to have a utilitarian approach to texts, as if the only thing to be gained from them is some shallow, didactic point.
In the 21st century? I’d do it using tech, which allows children to all move at their own pace.
And I’d deliver said tech in beautiful spaces where students are supported by adults who respect them and are advocates for their success.
@JamesAFurey For this one thing teachers did in my school, they asked us to present the work we did in group projects as well, on which we were graded individually. Obviously this isn't the perfect answer to grading fairly, many students might not present as well, but it's a good start.
