The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) is warning the public about a recent rise in e-transfer scams on online marketplaces.

Since November 1, 2024, EPS has received four reports of scams targeting buyers on platforms like Kijiji and Facebook Marketplace. In each case, the buyer sends an email that looks like a legitimate e-transfer. When the seller clicks the link to accept the payment, they are taken to a fake website designed to look like their bank’s site. After entering their login details, the scammers steal their information and gain access to their bank account. So far this month, victims have lost over $6,700 to this scam.

“As e-transfers become a popular way to pay on these platforms, scammers are finding new ways to steal your money and personal information,” says Det. Linda Herczeg from the EPS Financial Crimes Section.
