Next time, I will bring my own food to ensure my wellbeing. However, in 2024, expensive conferences that are fully aware of dietary restrictions must do better. This is a huge accessibility concern for those with medical conditions controlled directly/indirectly by food 3/3
Dear scientific conferences - if you state you cater to dietary restrictions, please do this. By not having alternative food options for a full day conference, you are limiting the accessibility for those with medical conditions that are controlled via regular food intake 1/3
Yesterday, as a vegan with many health issues, I had to leave a scientific conference early due to becoming unwell due to only being offered raw courgette/zucchini. I can only take my medication with meals, and without my medication I become extremely unwell. 2/3
Frans de Waal has died. Below is a photograpgh of Frans' showing a male chimpanzee inviting another to reconcile after a fight with the invitation accepted a few minutes later. One of my all time favorite images.
Frans was an incredible observer + student of animal behavior and a writer, in addition to a photographer. His early book, Chimpanzee Politics, not only conveys its topic beautifully, it also gives a sense of Frans' deep intuition for social dynamics.

One of my first papers (a long one with a main paper + response to comments)--written in my early years of grad school--we co-wrote. It's topic is the building blocks of morality in monkeys + apes.

Even though our approaches to science differed, I am grateful to have known him and for our work together. So long, Frans.
It's extraordinary that the @ASA_UK are themselves using a bulldog in an advert. Flat faced breeds have boomed in recent years, fuelled by media, celebrities and the use of these dogs in advertising. However, they struggle with serious and often life-limiting health problems. 🧵
Have our #animalwelfare standards really fallen so much that @looknorthBBC think its appropriate to showcase a trainer using prong collars? Such poor journalistic standards again from the media. Im becoming incredibly disheartened of ever improving on this normalised animal abuse

Our new study about dog howling suggests that breeds genetically closer to wolves (ancient breeds) respond with howling and stress to wolf howls more than modern breeds, but the age of the dog is a crucial factor. @holly_howls@IntlWolfCenter@Chimpsahoi@tamsa42@FamDogProject
1/6: Humans provide dogs with valuable resources like 🍖, so it would be beneficial for dogs to form reputations of them based on direct interaction and/or indirectly through observation (#SocialEavesdropping) & use this information to choose with whom to interact. #AnimBehav2023
Dear fellow academics,
Can we stop including accolades in letters of ref re: "productivity on mat leave", "works evenings & weekends", "always on call" etc. This creates benchmarks & contributes to a work only culture. @AcademicChatter@Momademia@academicvoices#academictwitter
What can #chimpanzees clasping their hands teach us about human and non-human animal culture? Our study, published #openaccess in @RSocPublishing examines the role of communication in initiating this social custom, the grooming handclasp (GHC). https://t.co/QG0i7le1fH a🧵 1/10
