@HistoryRayner @markc01@AusRepublic The republic referendum was sank by republicans unable to decide on a model, notably introducing the word "president". You say that and people think USA and therefore directly elected. Yes, there needs a real talk about the role, and how the person would be elected or appointed.
@markc01@AusRepublic The exercise is mostly symbolic: replace the Queen with the governor general (currently appointed by the PM so is the classic job for mates) as they are the real head of state. Appt would change to 2/3 parliament or even direct election. Cost? About $100m or .015% of natl budget.
@AusRepublic Not sure it's a good idea to label opponents to Labor as the "extreme far-right of politics". That just adds to the division and turns the republic into a hyper partisan issue. Like it or not, the republic movement will need some of the right to succeed. #auspol
@Schris07@SkyNewsAust@Nicholas_Reece Nice to see you can copy & paste from a govt website. Of course you ignore the bit where green & gold, by far the most popular & representative colour scheme through history (and still is), was officially set as the national colours to end the confusion. Deception 4 quashed.
@Schris07@SkyNewsAust@Nicholas_Reece That's training gear. They wear anything, often to reflect sponsorships. Most important is on field and there is no history I know of blue and gold. Another deception quashed.
Change The Aussie Flag FB about to start a summer poll. Submissions accepted by 5 Dec. Evolutionary Aus made the top 8 last time while Independent Aus fell after 2 successes. An ochre version of Indpt Aus is submitted & a "boomerang" tweak of Evo. #auspol https://t.co/IjUsSrkMfr
@PunishedHRv6@SkyNewsAust@Nicholas_Reece Eureka had nothing to do with forming the country. That happened in 1901 when the 6 colonies federated. Even then, Australia was still a British colony, only fully severing ties in 1986 with the Australia Acts. I don't recall saying the Aboriginal flag had more relevance.
@PunishedHRv6@SkyNewsAust@Nicholas_Reece It's a Victorian colonial flag used in a protest over taxes, and now it's hijacked by militant protest groups. Nothing to do with the formation of this country. An interesting historical flag, that's it.
@CogitoErgoSumAu @surfbird03@JanainOz@SkyNewsAust@Nicholas_Reece Obfuscating & resorting to abuse shows you have no counter case. You know the current flag is a relic from our British colony days & we saw ourselves as British. Now we're an independent nation & the flag should reflect that. I'd have thought any proud Australian would want that.
@CogitoErgoSumAu @surfbird03@JanainOz@SkyNewsAust@Nicholas_Reece Yes. Except Australia will do it smarter. The problem in NZ is it got divisive with the idiotic Red Peak design, and when it wasn't selected, that unruly 10% didn't vote for the final (boring blue fern) proposal. The black version would have won. Only a 5% swing was in it.
@surfbird03@SkyNewsAust@Nicholas_Reece The flag is outdated & a joke, and all those former British colonies that still fly a colonial flag are in a pathetically small & ever dwindling club. I never mentioned anything bad about Australia. To the contrary, my care about Australia is why I want the flag changed.
@SkyNewsAust@DrBenjaminJones The Blaxland design is way too busy, dark & complex. The Southern Cross looks puny on the other & we're losing the Federation Star too. This proposal addresses both & coincidentally is known as the Independent Australia Flag. #PoliticsHQ@Nicholas_Reece@CampbellNewman
@SkyNewsAust@CampbellNewman The so-called democratic process in 1901 was a time when Australians saw themselves as, and were, British subjects, and rules of the competition required the design to show British subservience. Hardly democratic, and plenty has changed since. #PoliticsHQ@Nicholas_Reece
@SkyNewsAust@Nicholas_Reece This design is a straight evolution - keeping much of the original blue and white and adding our national colours of green and gold from the golden wattle. #PoliticsHQ
@SkyNewsAust@Nicholas_Reece It should be changed because it's out of date. The problem is settling on a design. This one is the current flag with Union Jack removed and colours changed to our own national colours - green & gold from the golden wattle. #PoliticsHQ
