It is truly impressive to see the transformative steps being taken by the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development @fkeyamo ⁠in repositioning Nigeria’s aviation sector.

From the review and signing of new bilateral air service agreements and treaties to the development of policies, standards, and regulatory frameworks aimed at strengthening the industry, there is a clear effort to create an aviation ecosystem that is more competitive, structured, and open to new players.

One of the most commendable developments is the emergence of initiatives that give operators greater opportunities to access aircraft of their preferred brands and configurations. For years, we have seen operators depend heavily on dry and wet lease arrangements, sometimes under conditions that were not necessarily favourable to them. Yet, because operators needed to meet passenger demands, expand routes, or maintain operational capacity, they often had little choice but to accept these arrangements.

Creating more opportunities for Nigerian operators to access aircraft on better and more competitive terms can significantly change the dynamics of our aviation industry. It creates room for growth, encourages investment, and gives new and existing players a more level playing ground, provided they meet the required regulatory and safety standards.

I also commend Mr. President and the Honourable Minister for looking backwards while moving forward, particularly with the attention given to the long-standing case of former aviation workers of the defunct Nigeria Airways who were disengaged over two decades ago. Addressing issues that have remained unresolved for years sends a powerful message that government can still provide closure and renewed hope, even for those who have waited for decades.

This, to me, is what a renewed hope administration should represent: creating opportunities for the future while also correcting the injustices and unfinished business of the past.

To the Honourable Minister, @fkeyamo, and the Managing Director of FAAN⁠ @faan_md I believe there is another opportunity we can explore.

Can we begin to automate and modernise toll and access payments across our airports by partnering with credible fintech companies like @usesfxmoneyapp to introduce Tap-to-Pay solutions?

Imagine a system where passengers, particularly foreigners and members of the Nigerian diaspora who may not have Nigerian-issued cards or may not yet have a FAAN card, can simply use their contactless-enabled phones, smartwatches, or bank cards to make payments at airport tollgates and other access points.

This is already becoming standard practice in many developed economies. Implementing a similar solution across our airports would improve convenience, reduce queues, minimise cash handling, enhance transparency, and make the Nigerian aviation experience more seamless for international travellers.

With Nigeria’s growing fintech ecosystem, aviation and financial technology can work together to create a more efficient and digitally enabled airport experience.

There is a huge opportunity here for collaboration between FAAN, the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, and Nigerian fintech innovators.

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE HONOURABLE MINISTER OF AVIATION AND AEROSPACE DEVELOPMENT AND THE FEDERAL AIRPORTS AUTHORITY OF NIGERIA (FAAN) @faan_md

Dear Honourable Minister @fkeyamo

I would like to begin by commending your leadership and proactiveness in advancing the integration of cashless payment policies across Nigeria’s airports. This initiative is not only a significant milestone in strengthening transparency and curbing corruption within airport operations, but it also positions Nigeria in alignment with global aviation standards and best practices.

Your commitment to reform and modernization within the aviation sector has not gone unnoticed. As an aviator myself, I understand the complex regulatory environment and the long-standing structural challenges that have affected the growth of the aviation industry over the years. Many policies, restrictions, and international alignments once placed Nigeria at a disadvantage within the global aviation ecosystem. However, under your leadership, we are witnessing conscious and intentional efforts to reposition the industry to a level we can all be proud of as Nigerians.

I write today out of a strong belief in the power of collaboration. Sustainable progress in critical sectors such as aviation requires partnerships between government institutions and innovative private sector actors who share a commitment to efficiency, transparency, and global competitiveness.
