call it cliche, but i honestly think you could summarise all self-development and mental health advice into that one sentence.
another cool way of saying it:
- the only way to prepare for the future is to wholeheartedly focus on the present.
Anything external which you don’t control can never provide lasting security. Another person, a job, praise, money. Focusing on externals will only promote fluctuation in mood (excitement to despair). Choose inner stillness.
I've noticed it's so easy to convince myself "everything is shit, always has been, always will be" when I feel the slightest bit down.
But the other day I realised how unfair on my life this was - taking one moment and violently splashing it onto every other moment in my life.
A simple rule for life that rarely fails:
Optimize for enthusiasm. Make as many choices as you can that leave you feeling energetic and interested. Pay attention to when you have the urge to pursue or participate in something and do more of it.
Allow yourself to be disappointed by life. Because being disappointed means you’re engaging with reality. The opposite is never getting into the arena, and never actualising anything. Life passes you by in a flash. Better to be disappointed than to always be left wondering.
The easiest way to not despair at the finitude of life is to fill your free time with hobbies you do not for a reward, but for the joy of them themselves.
