Harry Kane going from football’s most famous trophyless player to a Ballon d’Or winner might be the greatest example of why changing employers can improve your life.

"We have done it. You always wanted the best for me. You sacrificed yourself for my dreams."

"I love you."
its actually quite refreshing to have a PM whose embarrassing history involves raising money for charity, rather than burning £50 notes in front of homeless people and shagging pigs...

The summer she died, Princess Diana told a friend there was exactly one person in her life who would never sell her out. Twenty-nine years and a lot of money later, he still hasn't.
Pretty much everyone else around her cashed in. Her butler sold his story to a tabloid for a reported £300,000, and the army officer she'd loved tried to sell her love letters for £10 million.
That was James Hewitt. Back in 2003 he had 64 letters from her, a lot of them written while he was off at the Gulf War, and Diana had reportedly once asked him to burn them. He'd already helped with Princess in Love in 1994, a whole book about their affair that came out while she was alive to read it. Nobody ever paid the £10 million. By that September the best offer was £600,000, and in 2024 the letters were reportedly being shopped to a US auction house for up to $1 million after he'd put them up as collateral on a loan.
The one she trusted was Hasnat Khan, a heart surgeon. They met on August 27, 1995. He can still tell you it was a bank holiday Monday and she'd come in to visit one of his patients. Her biographer Christopher Andersen says she'd throw on a dark wig and sunglasses to sneak into the hospital and watch him operate.
She flew to Lahore to meet his family. She even had her butler ask a priest whether the two of them could get married, and Khan confirmed that himself years later.
He could also see what marrying her would cost him. Strangers mailed him cut-out photos of himself with a noose drawn around his neck. He believes his voicemails were being hacked as early as 1996. In his statement to the inquest, he said life with her would have been hell for him because of who she was.
They split up in the summer of 1997. A few weeks later she died in Paris, and he went to the funeral.
Then the Diana business really took off. Paul Burrell's memoir sold over two million copies, and William and Harry called it "a cold and overt betrayal." An independent inquiry found in 2021 that Martin Bashir got his famous Panorama interview by showing her brother faked bank statements.
Khan wouldn't talk to the author who wrote a whole book about the two of them, and he says he never read it. When the producers of the 2013 Naomi Watts movie made it sound like he'd given them his blessing, he called that a complete lie.
The handful of times he's spoken up, it was to defend her. He said Bashir took the exact thing the public loved about her, how vulnerable she was, and used it against her.
What she told her friend that summer was simple. "Everybody sells me out. Hasnat is the one person who will never sell me out."
He's been offered plenty since, and he's turned every bit of it down.
she meets a guy who is fine on paper. he has a stable job, he texts back on time, he remembers what she said about her sister, he doesn't play weird games.
she feels nothing romantic toward him, tells her friends, and everyone around her says the same thing: you're used to toxic guys, you're being too picky, attraction can grow if you just give it time.
so she decides to be mature about it. she goes on a third date, and a fourth, and a fifth. she tells herself that maybe this is what healthy dating is supposed to feel like, and then she spends the whole drive home from every dinner sitting in traffic trying to convince herself that she had a good time.
if you have ever been the guy on the other side of that dynamic, you know how hard it wrecks your confidence, even when she never says a word about it. she is polite to you. she thanks you when you pick up the bill. she introduces you to her friends and says you're a really good person. and then when you reach for her hand across the table or try to kiss her in the car, her shoulders go stiff for half a second before she catches herself and leans in.
nobody has to say out loud that the attraction isn't there. you can feel it in the room. you feel it in the way she never initiates physical contact first. you feel it in the way she always remembers she has an early morning whenever you hang out past nine. you feel it in the way you start working twice as hard to be helpful, funny, and agreeable because some part of you knows that if you stop being useful, there is nothing else holding the two of you together.
and when it finally ends three or four months later, the guy is completely blindsided. from his side, nothing went wrong. they never fought, he was always supportive, he did everything a good boyfriend is supposed to do. she ends up breaking it off over something small or vague because she can't bring herself to say the real truth, which is that she never wanted him in the first place and just ran out of energy to keep pretending.
a lot of men were taught to think about attraction like a checklist you complete. if you show up, behave well, listen to her problems, and don't do anything wrong, you have met the requirements and she owes you a trial period. when a woman says no, they take it like an unfair grade on their effort instead of the simple fact that the spark isn't there. desire gets treated like something she is holding back out of spite, instead of a gut feeling she doesn't control.
reversing the genders makes the whole argument collapse right away because men never treat attraction like a charity project. if a guy feels nothing when he looks at a woman, her being sweet and loyal doesn't make him feel obligated to date her. he doesn't sit down with his friends for three weeks trying to force himself to want her because she would make a reliable partner on paper. he just knows he isn't into her.
the reason women get pushed into doing this so often is that women are raised to treat a man's effort as a debt they have to repay. if he was nice to you, if he drove forty minutes to see you, if he paid for dinner, turning him down feels like being cruel. so instead of hurting his feelings for ten minutes on a tuesday night, she spends four months starving both of them inside a relationship she never wanted to be in.
getting told no stings for a week, and then you get over it and go find someone who lights up when you walk into the room. talking someone into dating you out of guilt doesn't get you love. it gets you a partner who respects your character, feels terrible about their lack of spark, and has to brace themselves every time you touch them
Couldn't top my sons school account up this morning due to my bank being down, spoke to 2 different people at the school to make sure they would allow him to have something to eat & drink & was assured he would be.
