No one has a First Amendment right to erect illegal encampments, blockade entrances, vandalize property, break windows and doors, block students from accessing campus, hold people hostage, and harass and intimidate “Zionists” (i.e. most Jews).
These are not activities protected by the First Amendment. These are crimes punishable by law.
What we are seeing here is protesters on American campuses, in 2024, spreading antizionist canards originating in Soviet Cold War propaganda. I wrote about this specific lie when I analyzed Mahmoud Abbas’s Soviet dissertation for @tabletmag. Abbas, of course, didn’t invent it himself—he copied it from Soviet propagandistic sources.
The USSR pounded the story of the supposed Zionist-Nazi collaboration in the Shoah into the global left & the developing world (including the Arab world) for decades. It’s a literal invention of the KGB. It was once deployed to oppress Soviet Jews, & it’s very much alive & well in anti-Israel far left & Palestinian activist circles today.
I’ve been watching Soviet antizionist propaganda from the 1960s-1970s getting resurrected & reproduced on Marxist websites since Oct 7 — including, in one case, a specific piece of writing by CPUSA that I know to have been sourced from & financed by Moscow in the 1970s. Not surprised to see this propaganda turn up at these protests, given all the hammer & sickles. In those circles, they take the truth of this imaginary plot line for granted. (You see it especially often among the Corbynites in the UK.)
But it does blow my mind to think that in 2024 students on elite American campuses are being propagandized with antisemitic lies produced by the USSR in the ‘60s & ‘70s.
Here’s the full piece on Abbas’s dissertation:

In the past century, all regimes obsessed with antisemitism and antizionism, which have consequently supported the Palestinian cause of no Jewish state, have found themselves in the dustbin of history: Nazi, Pan-Arabist, Soviet. The Ayatollah regime will meet the same fate. The only disturbing question, looking at the history of its antisemitic and antizionist predecessors, is how much damage it will cause Jews on its way to the dustbin of history. We have to make sure it is as little as possible...
We may not know for a while the full details of the Arab cooperation tonight in the interception of the Iranian drone and missile attack on Israel, but it was significant without a doubt, including the use of Jordan’s airspace. It certainly helped to save many Israeli lives. >
