A New Era? Open Edition does not do today's @deekaymotion x @CozomoMedici collaboration justice. Instead it feels like the next pillar of a larger movement. Flash Back: The date is November 6, 2020. A collage based on Jacques-Louis David's The Intervention of the Sabine Women, it captures the zeitgeist of the moment, a bold Bitcoin visible on a central Roman soldier's shield. Nifty Gateway Co-Founder @dccockfoster: "Crypto isn't just a technology, it's a revolution. This artwork captures the revolution." In an at-the-time small crypto art space, it is offered as a $40 open edition, reaching 415 collector's hands, a very significant number. The artwork is consistently referred to as one of the all-time Nifty Gateway grails and representative of an era. Flash Forward: The date is August 10, 2023. The setting is @coinbase, an established site with a new and ambitious @BuildOnBase with the goal of onboarding 1 billion collectors. The artist is @deekaymotion in collaboration with esteemed collector @CozomoMedici presenting two artworks entitled "New Era". DeeKay displays his animated wizardry to a figure of Cozomo emphatically stamping ETH and BTC flags onto the Federal Reserve. DeeKay: "It's time to embrace a new era where digital currency defines the future. Let's recognize and accept the significance of decentralization, broader opportunities, streamlined processes, and worldwide reach. The future is now." In a larger - but still small - crypto art space, it is offered as an $18 open edition, and will reach tens of thousands of collector's hands, a very significant number. Aside from market data, the artworks feel destined to matter. I'd be surprised if they are not looked back on similarly to Last Stand when all is said and done. Symbols of an era.
