Here's some tips for writing DAX functions / udfs. Some might seem common-sense, but there's a lot of little nuances in functions that you should know about.

For those interested, here is the GitHub repo for the #PowerBI Music Player Custom Visual (including ALL source code) that I shared at #PowerBINextStep last night.
If you just want the visual, it's in the dist folder. :)

More DAX gold from SQLBI ⚡️
User-defined functions have arrived, and this article nails the nuances, structure, and best practices. No matter how long I’ve been working in DAX, I keep learning—and no source provides a sharper head start than @SQLBI.
Huge thanks for continuing to raise the bar!

Power BI report optimization for beginners: what do you do when you have issues with slow visuals, slow refresh, and models that get too big?
This article focuses on some initial, common focus points that you can look at, before drilling deeper

Did you know that we have free Power BI video trainings for upskilling with semantic models? https://t.co/grWLWmJUat
These first two are about the TMDL view and Notebooks. We also have a detailed TE3 training.
For beginners, there's a course that intros you to semantic models.
My dear #PowerBI and #MicrosoftFabric friend in my latest article https://t.co/pwenBFJ2QJ I explain how I created a Schedule for our upcoming @databash_live conference.
This morning, I was 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐝 😲 (not kidding) to hear that there are consulting firms suggesting that data be moved out of semantic models to achieve a better consumption experience with LLMs.
Really?
What a lie.
Don't listen to my words. I have a vested interest in Power BI semantic models.
Hear what a lie this is, straight from Rob Collie in his podcast (linked below - if you don't have much time, go straight to 26:30).
𝑇ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑖𝑠 𝑛𝑜 𝑏𝑒𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑢𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒𝑑 𝑑𝑎𝑡𝑎 𝑠𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑐𝑒 𝑜𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑒𝑡 𝑛𝑜𝑤 𝑜𝑟 𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑒𝑒𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒 𝑓𝑢𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑎𝑛 𝐿𝐿𝑀 𝑡𝑜 𝑡𝑎𝑙𝑘 𝑡𝑜 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑛 𝑎 𝑃𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟 𝐵𝐼 𝑠𝑒𝑚𝑎𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑐 𝑚𝑜𝑑𝑒𝑙.
If you heard stories like "consulting firms suggesting to get all data out of Power BI semantic models", please write your story in the comments. I understand competition, but I cannot justify lying to customers. Rob Collie has already expressed my thoughts, so I don't need to add anything else; I agree with him.

Excited to be hosting the #PowerBI 10-year celebration with Patrick and maybe a surprise guest or two!
The #GuyInACube journey has paralleled the Power BI journey, so this is really special for us.
Looking forward to seeing folks in the chat on Thursday, July 24th @ 8am Pacific!

DAX SVGs in Power BI are starting to reach critical mass. Yes, you can do some cool stuff and there are excellent examples and use-cases.
I see reports that are almost 100% DAX SVG on a regular basis. Duct tape is good for fixing little things; don't make your house from it.
It needs 15 minutes to watch a video where an LLM enables you to talk with your data... for free!
Watch carefully: It does not just "work".
It's another tool - extremely sophisticated - integrated into an ecosystem.
We're living exciting times.

@marcorus presenting about DAX User Defined Functions (not available yet before you ask…) at #SQLBits. He is so excited about them he is going to change his name to Macro Russo.
We have a fresh new version of DAX Studio (3.3.0) with so many fixes and nice new features!
Many users asked, "Run a query on a PBIX file that is not open," and now DSCMD (the command-line version) opens it for you!
And there are 41 other items in the release note.
Immediate upgrade, no brainer!

Rounding: Power Query vs. Others
Did you know that #PowerQuery may round numbers differently than you learned in grade school? Unlike #DAX, Microsoft #Excel and Microsoft #SQLServer, Power Query is different: it defaults to "banker’s rounding."

NEW SUBSTACK ARTICLE!
If you were confused or felt lost with the Direct Lake mode in #MicrosoftFabric, I have "great" news for you - things just got even worse!
We now have TWO different Direct Lake mode "flavors" - OneLake and SQL.

This article + video describes how to implement a dynamic Pareto calculation in Power BI based on a measure that can be selected from a slicer and dynamically filtered by other slicers in the report.
