With all due respect to the Office of the President, this post contains several claims that are factually inaccurate and theologically misguided, and as a Catholic I feel compelled to respond.

1. The Pope was not elected to please any president.

Pope Leo XIV was elected by 133 cardinals from across the world in a sacred conclave, on the fourth ballot, on May 8, 2025. 

The Holy Spirit guides the conclave, not American politics.

To suggest that “if I wasn’t in the White House, Leo wouldn’t be in the Vatican”  is not only historically ignorant but theologically offensive to every Catholic on earth.

2. He was not an unknown outsider.

Pope Leo XIV served as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops under Pope Francis, one of the most powerful roles in the Vatican, responsible for selecting bishops for dioceses worldwide. 

He was one of the most qualified candidates in the College of Cardinals.

3. He is deeply rooted in service, not politics.

An Augustinian missionary who worked for decades in Peru, Pope Leo XIV dedicated his life to the poor and the Gospel long before any political figure noticed him. 

His name honors Leo XIII, the Pope who championed workers’ rights and the poor during the Industrial Revolution, a tradition of Catholic Social Teaching that predates any modern political party.

4. The Pope’s role is prophetic, not partisan.

When the Pope speaks on peace, nuclear weapons, immigration, or the dignity of nations, he is fulfilling the mission of Christ, not opposing any government.

His first words as Pope were “Peace be with you all,”  echoing the Risen Christ (John 20:19).

A Pope who is silent on injustice would be failing his divine mandate.

5. Demanding a Pope “get in line” with a president contradicts 2,000 years of Church history.

From St. Peter before Nero, to St. Thomas More before Henry VIII, to John Paul II before Soviet communism, the Church has never existed to validate earthly power.

“We must obey God rather than men.” (Acts 5:29)

As Catholics, we pray for all leaders, including President Trump.

But we stand firmly with our Holy Father.

Habemus Papam. And he answers to God alone.

🔴 El New York Times acaba de publicar el relato más devastador sobre Trump desde el inicio de la guerra. Y es una bomba.

Jonathan Swan y Maggie Haberman, dos periodistas de la Casa Blanca, revelan cómo Trump tomó la decisión de entrar en guerra contra Irán. Lo que describen es exactamente lo que analizo en *El Titiritero de la Casa Blanca*.

Aquí están los hechos.

Netanyahu vendió un sueño. El 11 de febrero, en la Sala de Situación, el primer ministro israelí presentó un escenario en cuatro actos: matar al Guía Supremo, destruir el ejército iraní, desencadenar una revolución popular, instalar un nuevo régimen. Incluso mostró un video de montaje con los "futuros líderes" de Irán. Trump respondió: "Sounds good to me." En una frase, acababa de sellar el destino de la región.

Al día siguiente, la CIA dijo que era humo. Las partes 3 y 4 del pitch de Netanyahu, la revolución popular y el cambio de régimen, fueron calificadas de "farsa" por el propio Ratcliffe. Rubio tradujo: "In other words, it's bullshit." El general Caine añadió: "Es el procedimiento estándar de los israelíes. Sobrevenden, y sus planes no siempre están bien desarrollados."

Trump lo oyó. Y aun así dijo que sí.

Vance lo vio todo. El vicepresidente fue el único en la sala que se opuso frontalmente, advirtiendo que la guerra podría "destruir la coalición política de Trump", que el Estrecho de Ormuz era el verdadero punto de vulnerabilidad, que nadie podía predecir las represalias iraníes cuando la supervivencia de un régimen estaba en juego. Dijo: "Sabes que pienso que es una mala idea. Pero si quieres hacerlo, te apoyaré."

Esto no es coraje político. Es deferencia.

Susie Wiles miró. La jefa de gabinete, que tenía preocupaciones, estimó que no era "su rol" expresar una opinión sobre una decisión militar delante de los demás. "Animó a los consejeros a compartir sus puntos de vista." Ella se calló.

El general Caine nunca dijo no. Expuso los riesgos: disminución de los stocks de municiones, Estrecho de Ormuz, no hay un camino claro hacia la victoria. Luego dijo: "Si ordena la operación, el ejército la ejecutará."

Trump, por su parte, "solo oía lo que quería oír."

Y Trump firmó a bordo del Air Force One, 22 minutos antes del plazo fijado por su propio general: "Operation Epic Fury is approved. No aborts. Good luck."

Así es como se entra en guerra en el siglo XXI. No con una deliberación solemne. No con un voto del Congreso. No con una estrategia de salida. Con una presentación de diapositivas de Netanyahu, un "sounds good to me" y una nota enviada desde un avión.

En *El Titiritero de la Casa Blanca*, escribo que los verdaderos decisores son aquellos que preparan las presentaciones que Trump ve. Netanyahu lo entendió mejor que nadie. Escenificó una hora de espectáculo visual en la Sala de Situación con el Mossad de fondo, videos de "futuros líderes", una promesa de victoria rápida y limpia.

Y Trump dijo que sí. Mientras Vance, Rubio, Wiles y Caine miraban.

Applebaum's piece is worth reading slowly because the specific details are doing work that the summary can't.

Danish military commanders - inside a NATO alliance the United States founded - had to sit in a room and war-game whether their forces would shoot down American planes and kill American soldiers. Some of them still haven't fully recovered from running that exercise. The most popular app in Denmark during Applebaum's visit was one that identifies American products so users know not to buy them.

NATO has invoked Article 5 exactly once in its history. On behalf of the United States. After September 11th. Allied troops went to Afghanistan and some of them died there. Trump told reporters those allies "stayed a little back, a little off the front lines." The families of soldiers who didn't come back heard that.

Now Trump is in the middle of a war in the Persian Gulf with the Strait of Hormuz locked, oil prices spiking, and he's telling NATO allies - the same ones he insulted and tariffed and threatened - that he's "demanding" they come help solve a problem his own decisions helped create.

Applebaum's conclusion is precise: he doesn't connect what he does on one day to what happens weeks later. Allied leaders have drawn their conclusions. The rupture, as Mark Carney called it, isn't coming. It already happened.

People please stop claiming that if only "Iran would do a deal" then this war would end. You are absolute idiots. Trump's terms are a SURRENDER of everything, not a "deal." And Israel will of course sabotage any deal in the first place by killing / bombing the negotiators.

If you actually think Iran is the cause of this war, remember that the Strait of Hormuz was WIDE OPEN before Trump and Israel attacked. And they did it on purpose. It was Trump who tore up the deal that was already in place, btw: the JCPOA. He trashed it and now wants it back.

Too late. Trump wants to wage a weekend war with zero consequences and an easy off-ramp. He's now finding out that's impossible if the other side won't surrender to your outrageous demands.
