4 years is half a lifetime in sport. For any athlete who is experiencing the post-Olympic blues and is struggling to see themselves lasting that long Olympiad of endlessly pushing themselves to the limit, the inevitable lows and disappointments all endured in the hope of the occasional, but euphoric high, there has to be a new, interim goal.
And that interim goal is even more important for those players who barely make a living by regularly playing international tournaments. Those who have little chance of winning a major #WorldTour event, but whose participation is essential for the global development of our sport.
Which is why the #CommonwealthGames (CG), and Continental Games are so important. Apart from the development of sport within the region, they provide an additional major goal to really ignite the motivation between 2 #OlympicGames.
The decision not to include badminton as one of the 10 sports for the scaled-back CG in Glasgow in 2026, after 15 consecutive appearances over a 56-year period, is catastrophic for our sport.
What is the motivation now for players from many Commonwealth nations? What will now ignite the internal flame of desire, that flame that keeps you inspired, even on the most difficult or bleakest of days?
Perhaps more applicable for players from outside of Asia, but even the reigning Mixed Doubles champions Terry Hee/Jessica Tan have each in their entire careers earned in prize money, less than the equivalent of just 2 years average annual wage in their home country of Singapore!
The financial โrewardsโ for most payers are therefore simply not enough to motivate them for another 4 years before the next Olympics.
Badminton is the second highest participation sport globally, and since 1994 has been one of the mandatory Commonwealth sports. And with badminton already dominated by Asian countries, for the global development of our sport we desperately need the vast majority of elite players from most Commonwealth nations to remain motivated enough to continue to play and inspire the next generation of players in their own countries.
Sadly, this decision for the 2026 CG may just have put paid to that.

Betul-betul suka dengan frasa:
โAllah Pegang Waktu.โ
Trust. The timing.
Everything happens according to Allah's divine plan.
Even when all your plans fail and all doors seem shut, donโt despair. Cry out to the All-Knowing and seek refuge in Him. He'll find a way out for you. Trust Him.
