Property owners must clear snow or ice from their sidewalks to keep them safe and accessible for everyone ❄️🚶♀️♿
The City does not clear snow or ice from sidewalks in front of residential or commercial property. It also does not clear snow blocking access to sidewalks, vehicles, or driveways.
If you own a building or lot, you are required to clear your sidewalk after it snows. Failure to follow these rules can result in enforcement action.
Snow clearing rules: Clear a path at least 4 feet wide. Clear access to crosswalks and curb cuts if you own a corner property. Shovel bus stops and fire hydrants 🚌🚒 Spread salt, sand, or other granular material if surfaces are frozen. Do not shovel snow into the street or bike lanes 🚫🚲
Deadlines ⏳ Snow stops 7 AM to 5 PM. Clear within 4 hours. Snow stops 5 PM to 9 PM. Clear within 14 hours. Snow stops 9 PM to 7 AM. Clear by 11 AM.
Damages we agreed upon w/ @EmpireStateDev in 2014 mitigated the risk that badly needed #affordableHousing at #AtlanticYards would b completed 2 late 2 address displacement in central #Brooklyn. The funds allow the City to do what State has not. They must be collected.
Property owners are responsible for clearing sidewalks. As a reminder, property owners, including restaurants w/ outdoor dining structures, may NOT push snow into the street, including bike lanes. This impedes snow clearing operations & is illegal. Snow may be moved against the building, to the curb line, or areas on private property.
Sidewalks should be passable for all pedestrians, including a minimum 4-foot clear path, where possible. While property owners are not required to clear bus stops, @NYCSanitation suggests that property owners clear a path from the sidewalk to the curb at the bus stop. The fine for the initial summons is from $100 to $150 and for every summons thereafter, between $150 and $350. If the snow stops falling between:
•7 a.m. and 5 p.m., property owners must clear sidewalks within 4 hours
•5 p.m. and 9 p.m., property owners must clear sidewalks within 14 hours
•9 p.m. and 7 a.m., property owners must clear sidewalks by 11 a.m.

Curbside composting is CITYWIDE - that means EVERY resident in EVERY building has weekly service on their recycling day.
Make sure all your food scraps (dairy & meat too!) go in the bin. Same for yard waste and food-soiled paper. We want it all!
