A couple of weeks back I spent the day at the National Defence Academy, addressing 2400 cadets about my circumnavigation. I was eagerly looking forward to rhe national anthem and meeting the commandant.
Three decades ago, I used to sit in the audience, listening to speakers I thought I would never become. Standing on the other side of it now felt like coming about on a long tack.
Before the talk, I met Admiral Anil Jaggi, the current Commandant, who was a divisional officer at the Naval Academy and we reminisced the time when I wore rhe whites. He is probably the first ex Navac to command the NDA!
I toured the campus and saw a menu card signed by Queen Elizabeth II, from a meal she attended at NDA, visited Sudan Block, home to the portraits of gallantry award winners and past Commandants, including Admiral Awati, reminding not just of the officers who passed theough its gates but also of the institutional memory this place carries in its hold.
Grateful for the invitation, and for a day that brought the cadet I once was back.
