I think USMNT fans are being a little delusional in general about Matt Freese.

Yes, he made a mistake against Belgium and also one in the GC. He probably hasn’t won us a game with a phenomenal performance either.

Yet, he’s played 19 games for us and maybe has like 2-3 notable errors. That’s not that bad.

Of course we need a higher standard. I wouldn’t feel extremely confident he’ll bring that headed into next cycle. I don’t think he’s any more than just “one of the main contenders” for the starting role at the moment, but he’s not that terrible.

I hear people constantly mention how he’s been average in MLS this season, and it’s not wrong. At the same time, the GK’s who’ve been better (Turner and Brady) play for good teams. Freese plays for an average team. Brian Schwake, a prior unknown who has had a breakout, plays for the best team in the league.

GK analytics (the predominant basis for most fan conclusions about GK performance) are highly reliant on the overall level of the team (mostly team defending). The reason for that is because GK analytics aren’t yet able to measure for the quality of defense in front of a GK. The GK’s on the best teams with the best defenses usually register the best analytics.

So I think the argument about his club form is at least a tad deceiving. We saw Matt Turner perform arguably worse at the WC against the worst team we faced than Freese did in four games. The idea that Turner would be so much more (or any more) capable because he has better MLS stats is defeated once you see them play for the senior team and Freese’ performances for the USMNT over the last two years have not really been any worse than Turner. They’ve arguably been better.

I think there’s real room for criticism. I don’t think he’s earned any sort of starter role, but the idea that he’s like our worst GK ever or he’s really more than the most marginal amount worse than the current options right now isn’t something I think is supported by anything concrete.
