I flew from Paris #AIEngineer Summit just in time to Helsinki, gave a talk about how to make AI agents reliable in practise in #MyData2025

In the AIEngineer, my absolute #1 highlight was, surprisingly, the @GoogleDeepMind Gemini talk by Lyra Brightsong, I mean, Paige Bailey. "Nothing new"; just rapid-fire of pure awesomeness.
- Creating a flawless image generation app on the fly in a minute. No, she did not create the nice D&D picture in a minute. She created the app that creates the picture.
- Gradually solving a complex data processing problem with a Python Notebook like it was nothing, with voice.
- Gemma 3n model which fits on your laptop is as good on Chatbot Arena ELO score as the best Google model from 7 months ago. You read that right.

Maybe read that again.

And of course the dozens of mandatory Evals talks with AI engineers. My favorite: 3 talented AI consultants arguing why they are sceptical of evals... and then explaining how they use LLM-as-judge to evaluate complex text descriptions. If you don't see the irony, don't worry - the "evals" confusion is a pandemic by now.

I suggest Evals are more like invariances than features, but yes, also more like features than products. The key is how you build, properly abstract, manage, maintain, upgrade and connect those invariances - not like you do it with the rest of your features.
