The KALRO Board of Management concluded its week-long Centre visits with a visit to the Non-Ruminants Research Centre (NRRC) in Naivasha. The purpose of the visit was to assess ongoing research activities, engage with staff, and gain a deeper understanding of the Centre’s role in advancing non-ruminant production technologies. As one of KALRO’s newest Centres, NRRC plays a key role in poultry research and serves as a major producer of eggs and chicks, contributing significantly to the dissemination of poultry technologies and management practices in the country.
During the visit, the Board expressed appreciation for the research initiatives being undertaken at the Centre and acknowledged its growing contribution to Kenya’s agricultural sector. While addressing staff, KALRO Board Chairman, Dr. Thuo Mathenge, reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to supporting the Centre and ensuring wider dissemination of technologies developed through research. KALRO Director General, Dr. Patrick Ketiem, also encouraged staff to embrace teamwork to enhance productivity, emphasizing the Centre’s strategic role as KALRO’s key poultry research and supply hub.
For years, potato farmers in Kenya struggled with one problem: getting clean, healthy seed. Most relied on recycled tubers passed down from season to season. The result was low yields, high disease pressure, and costs that kept eating into profits. Now, a new technology is changing that: Rooted Apical Cuttings - RACs.
During a recent tour of KALRO’s Horticultural Research Centre in Tigoni and the Dairy Research Centre in Oljoroorok, KALRO Board Chairman Dr. Thuo Mathenge, joined by Director General Dr. Patrick Ketiem and other Board members, saw how RACs are helping farmers turn the corner.
“RACs are disease-free planting material. They give farmers a clean start, lower the cost of production, and deliver better yields and quality,” Dr. Mathenge said.
The technology is part of KALRO’s push to close Kenya’s potato seed deficit. Unlike traditional seed tubers that often carry pests and diseases, RACs are produced through tissue culture under strict conditions. That means farmers plant with confidence, knowing their crop starts healthy.
The impact goes beyond potatoes. At KALRO Oljoroorok, the Board commended progress in dairy and fodder production, including a new training facility, improved dairy breeds, and expanded production of sweet lupin.
For smallholder farmers facing rising input costs, RACs offer a practical way to cut losses and increase income. It’s a shift from surviving on recycled seed to thriving with clean, reliable planting material.
The future of potato farming in Kenya is clean seed, and RACs are leading the way.

With a heavy heart and deep gratitude, I bid farewell to Prof. Raphael Munavu yesterday. Prof was a great educationist, a visionary leader, and a man whose quiet strength shaped the future of many young Kenyans, including myself.
I had the privilege of serving as the youngest representative on Kenya's third presidential working party on education reforms, which he chaired with wisdom, humility, and unwavering principle. In those rooms where the future of our nation's education was being written, Prof. Munavu didn't just listen to the youth, he truly heard us. He gave us a seat at the table not as tokens, but as thinkers. He believed that reform begins where experience meets fresh perspective, and he bridged that gap with grace.
To lose such a mentor is to feel the echo of his absence in every debate on education that will follow. But to have sat at his feet, learned from his example, and carried his torch even a small distance; and that is a gift death cannot touch.
I extend my heartfelt condolences to his entire family & friends, the PWPER fraternity, and the academic community at large. May we all be comforted as we celebrate a great man. Rest in Eternal Peace🙏🏾
Tonight at 9:00 PM on Monday Report with Trevor Ombija on Citizen TV, we continue the conversation on modern biotechnology and its impact on agriculture.
This episode turns the spotlight on potato farming, with a focus on innovation and the future of one of Kenya’s most important staple crops. We’ll unpack Shangi Kinga - an improved version of the popular Shangi variety, developed using modern biotechnology to resist Late Blight.
By strengthening a variety farmers already know and trust, Shangi Kinga aims to reduce the heavy reliance on chemical spraying while preserving the qualities that make Shangi widely preferred.
Join the discussion as we explore what this innovation means, how it works, and its potential to transform potato farming in Kenya.
Don’t miss out - tune in and be part of the conversation.
