No one will probably care about this but the 2001 Northern Illinois-Milwaukee baseball game was probably my favorite college baseball game I ever covered.
The QB you can trace the modern day passing attack back to has passed away. It all started in DeKalb. Fittingly enough, the town that gave birth to the flying ear of corn is where HC Howard Fletcher & Bork let er fly. The road outside of Huskie Stadium will be named for him. RIP.
I was on the @NIUNorthernStar baseball beat with @ngerts, & I’ll tell ya, that was a tough season for 2 student journalists to put words to. The NCAA Tournament seemed light years away then, but they’ve traveled those light years now.
A great story going into the @NCAABaseball Tourney is @NIU_Baseball. They went in ‘72, the program was dropped, came back & in ‘96 there was a play-in series. I covered a 36 game winless streak in ‘99. Some good coaches tried, but it was a heavy lift. Now, they Diamond Dance.⚾️
@skylerkisellus@NIUNorthernStar Congrats on an incredible run at the Star, you did one heck of a job covering the Huskies. Good luck in your next chapter!
@MattMajkrzak Thanks coach for taking the time to answer this former beat writer's question. That's a good era of NIU basketball as well - Todd Peterson, James Hughes, Cory Sims and a MAC West division title. I admit I had some fun with that team in a March Madness 06 dynasty.
I'm disappointed no one asked him what 2K his NIU dynasty was on and how many seasons deep it went. 2K3? 2K4? The final one - 2K8? I'm curious to see what team he started with, quiz him on the players from that squad.
"I want this job, I want to be here."

Pretty cool play design here from Iowa & coach Ben McCollum. Usually you see a high ball screen here but that’s not what happens… & they get a wide-open look for a clutch 3! #MarchMadness
Garrett Wolfe had so many amazing games at Northern Illinois that one year I might just dedicate all of #RBRespectMonth to him 🐺
Here’s the time he ran for 325 yards on Eastern Michigan in 2004 👇

Can’t have #RBRespectMonth without Northern Illinois RB Garrett Wolfe 🐐
Wolfe ran for 325 yards and 2 TD on 43 carries in NIU’s 34-16 win at Eastern Michigan in 2004
