Dota always sold itself as borderless — you qualify on skill, full stop. A “Nations Cup” that can’t field some of the best players because of politics isn’t really crowning the best nation. Shame on the organizers. This shouldn’t be where the scene goes.

ENC Dota 2 qualifiers (@ENC_EN) kicked off today, and I still can’t get over it: Russia and Belarus aren’t allowed to field a team at all. Two of the obvious title contenders, banned before a single game is played.

And it gets worse on Ukraine’s side: the federation won’t let strong players from CIS mixes represent the country. So one of Dota’s deepest regions shows up without its best — not because of any rule, but because the organizers are sulking at the rest of the world.
