Did you know that not all monkeys eat bananas? Yes, the Red Colobus Monkey is one of the rare species in Africa that refuses bananas. These ancient creatures survive only on groundnuts, yam leaves, fresh flowers, tender plant shoots and tiny bugs, nature’s purest food.

The Red Colobus is not just any monkey, it is one of Africa’s oldest and most endangered primates, a species that once roamed freely across West Africa until habitat loss almost wiped them out. Many tribes believe the Red Colobus carries ancestral wisdom, and harming one brings generational misfortune.

Here in Gambia, the Red Colobus lives under strict protection. The forest rangers watch over them, tourists are warned never to feed or chase them, and locals treat them with deep respect. But don’t be deceived, their gentle face hides a fragile story.
They’re shy, easily frightened, and will vanish deep into the forest when they sense danger. Some say if you meet a Red Colobus staring at you in silence, you’ve been accepted temporarily into their ancient world.
