@MonicaLewinsky Graham was an odd political creature but he was a gentleman who fought for what he believed in. I’m certain he worked against those smears because it was the right thing to do, not because it was politically expeditious. I’d forgotten about that effort but I honor him for it.

In 1907, Sir Francs Galton went to a livestock exhibition and accidentally stumbled on a phenomenon that explains why central planning doesn’t work. Seeing villagers taking part in a contest to guess the weight of a slaughtered ox, he decided to analyse the results. While individual guesses varied wildly, Galton realised that the mean of the guesses were remarkably close to the true weight of 1,198 pounds. In fact, the villagers had collectively managed to come within 1% of the correct result. He also noted that the supposed experts – farmers and butchers – guessed poorly on their own. What Galton observed was the “wisdom of crowds.”
In 2004, Journalist James Surowiecki popularised the idea in his book called “The Wisdom of Crowds”, where he put forward the thesis that individual errors averages out over large (diverse and decentralized) groups, leaving the average estimate to converge towards the truth.
That the judgement of large groups of individuals is generally more accurate than estimates from experts helps explain why centralised government bureaucracies struggle to match the efficiency of a free market. Friedrich Hayek labelled this phenomenon "spontaneous order." Complex social systems do not originate from central planners, but emerge naturally using the dispersed knowledge of individuals acting purely in their own self-interest and responding only to local market signals. The free market condenses the collective wisdom and preferences from all market participants into a market price. Central planners cannot possibly acquire or process the amount of information contained in that single number.
When central planners try to design an economy and fix prices, they are fighting against the mathematical reality demonstrated by Surowiecki: small homogenous groups of “experts” acting on incomplete information cannot replicate the result of the aggregate of individual choices. Collectively, we possess more knowledge than even the cleverest expert could hope to obtain. History has demonstrated how central planning leads to shortages or surpluses as bureaucrats fail to guess what the free market could have told them.
This is an agreement to negotiate a deal. I suspect that the actual deal has already been negotiated or at least the outlines of that deal have been agreed to by both parties behind the scenes. Both sides declare victory by signing this MOU but it will be the actual details of the deal that has already been shaped that will determine who really wins. I expect the deal to be quite different from the MOU.
It has been hard to figure out from outside the negotiating channels who the Trump administration has actually been negotiating with on the inside of Iran. It now seems clear that Ghalibaf (sp?), the Iranian speaker of Parliament, has been the main interlocutor. It also seems, judging by Ghalibaf’s comments, that dealing with him and those around him isolates the IRGC military leaders inside Iran’s internal politics. To my mind, this is the real power-play from the perspective of U.S. interests.
I predict that the next 60 days and likely much longer will see the Trump administration work hard to further strengthen the Iranian negotiators at the expense of IRGC power. The regular Iranian military will also likely become a key entity in the power struggle within Iran, as they have been by most accounts almost completely untouched by the war and ignored. If I were the Trump administration, I would make the regular Iranian military, a guarantor of the deal, particularly if US military forces are required to be on the ground in Iran to clean up the so-called nuclear dust. The complications for Iranian internal politics that this would introduce would likely be extremely beneficial to American long-term interests.
The other important complication that we should introduce if it has not already been so in the undisclosed real deal behind the MOU is American control of Iranian profits from oil sales and from investment of the GCC $300 billion. That is the model that Trump used with Venezuela and I think it’s highly likely that is the model you will use here.
Complete isolation of the IRGC, consolidation around Ghalibaf of traditional state power centers long neglected, and direct financial control of the Iranian economy would be a complete victory for Trump but it would also be a victory for the Iranian people as it would set the conditions to control the politics of Iran for a generation. I believe that is what the administration is working to achieve.
UK soccer people on Twitter like "Americans just don't get it, oi? All their soulless corporate stadiums with indoor plumbing will never have the aura of 8,000 packing the terraces of Old Shittingdon for a nil-nil match, slipping on each other's vomit and singing Georgie Girl"
