The National Hydrology Project has established a platform for Water Agencies in India. The objective is, to improve the extent, quality, and accessibility.
Rivers have been the lifelines of humanity since the dawn of civilisation. On World Rivers Day 2025, the Survey of India reaffirms its commitment to protecting and managing these precious resources through the power of geospatial foundation that supports river conservation, disaster preparedness and sustainable water management.
Under the National Hydrology Project (NHP), high-resolution Digital Elevation Models are generated for the River Ganga and its tributaries covering 5 km area on both sides of river banks along with the orthorectified imageries. These datasets strengthen water resource planning, flood hazard monitoring, and disaster preparedness.
In addition, bathymetric surveys of southern rivers in West Bengal provide detailed cross-section mapping that improves monitoring and preparedness against flooding.
Through the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), the Survey of India delivered high-resolution DEM and maps for the Ganga River, extending 10 km on both banks for supporting the rejuvenation and sustainable management under the Namami Gange programme.
For hydro and water infrastructure projects, the Survey of India provides large-scale base maps and conducts the dam deformation studies, ensuring accuracy, safety, and long-term sustainability.
The Survey of India continues to provide authentic geospatial data and reliable surveys to safeguard rivers—the lifelines of our nation—for present and future generations.

A Tap That Put Villages Back on the Map
Batlan, Taraiyan and Chanbra, three remote villages in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, received tap water for the first time, bringing a major relief to the residents.
#6YearsOfJalJeevanMission
Hon'ble PM Shri @NarendraModi Ji launched the Jal Jeevan Mission with a bold vision-Har Ghar Jal: clean tap water in every rural household. In 2019, barely 17% of rural homes had tap water.
Today, that number has surged fivefold to nearly 81%, bringing health, dignity, and opportunity to millions.
But JJM is more than pipes and taps-it's a people's movement. It has improved health outcomes, freed women from hours of daily water-fetching, empowered communities, and created millions of rural livelihoods. From protecting families against water-borne diseases to giving women and children more time for education, work, and dreams, the ripple effects are transforming rural India.
Today, PM Modis vision is not just a target-it's a living reality in villages across the nation. #6YearsOfJalJeevanMission
