Samsung Shaken by iPhone Pricing… Chooses “Value for Money” over “Slim” for Galaxy S26

Samsung Electronics has scrapped its late-stage design plans for its next flagship smartphone, the “Galaxy S26,” shifting its strategy from prioritizing design to focusing on price competitiveness. The company had initially aimed for a “slim premium” concept with a thinner profile and larger battery capacity than the previous model, but after Apple decided to freeze the price of its next iPhone 17, Samsung abruptly pivoted toward reducing cost burdens instead. Within Samsung Electronics, the view has effectively taken hold that “keeping the S26 at 799 dollars is the top priority.”

According to reporting compiled on the 14th by Newspim, the Mobile eXperience (MX) Business Division of Samsung Electronics decided last month to revert the thickness of the base Galaxy S26 model to the level of its predecessor and has been redoing the design since then.

The base S26 model had essentially completed development at a thickness of 6.9 mm, 0.3 mm thinner than its predecessor. The battery capacity was also initially planned to be significantly increased to 4,900 mAh compared with the previous model, but this has been readjusted to 4,300 mAh, a slight increase over the prior device. A Samsung Electronics official, who requested anonymity, said, “It is unusual for this level of adjustment to be made when the design is almost finished.”

The backdrop to this decision by Samsung Electronics is seen as a combination of rising global component prices and changes in Apple’s pricing strategy. Apple chose a price-freeze policy, launching the base iPhone 17 model at the same 799 dollars as its predecessor, and the market response has been positive, with the current wait time to purchase the model reaching as long as one month. In this context, Samsung Electronics is said to have decided that, although price hikes across the lineup are unavoidable due to higher component costs, it will at least stick to the 799-dollar price point for the base model. Various options were considered to reduce costs, but in the end, there were effectively no alternatives other than adjusting the specifications.

An industry source in the mobile sector said, “From Samsung’s perspective, it is difficult to release the base model at a higher price than the iPhone,” adding, “In an environment where the barrier to entry on price is too high compared with competitors, it becomes increasingly hard for consumers to choose your product.”

The changes to the base specifications of the Plus and Ultra models are also not significant. The Plus model keeps the same thickness and battery capacity as its predecessor, while the Ultra model is 0.3 mm thinner at 7.9 mm, but its battery capacity remains at the previous level (5,000 mAh).

Within the MX Business Division, the lineup strategy for the S26 series is said to have been framed as price competitiveness for the base model, balance for the Plus model, and premium features for the Ultra model. In line with this concept, the chipset (AP) configuration is clearly differentiated by model. The S26 and S26 Plus, which will be released in major markets such as Korea and Europe, will be equipped with Samsung’s own next-generation mobile AP, the Exynos 2600, while the Ultra model will be fitted exclusively with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipset, further strengthening performance differentiation for the premium lineup.

Beyond AP configuration, the Ultra model’s display strategy also stands out for its differentiation. The S26 Ultra will adopt Samsung Display’s “Flex Magic Pixel” technology, allowing users to set a privacy-protection screen directly on the device. Put simply, a privacy-protection mode that previously required attaching an additional film after purchase will now be offered as a built-in feature of the smartphone itself. This function can be turned on or off according to user settings.

Industry watchers in the mobile sector analyze that Samsung Electronics is pursuing a dual-track strategy: leading the technology race around the Ultra in the premium market, while defending its share in the upper mid-range segment through price discipline.

Another industry official said, “Carrying out specification changes of this scale at a stage when the design is almost finalized is a case that shows just how intense price competition has become,” adding, “Emphasizing premium differentiation with the Ultra while aligning the base model’s price trajectory with the iPhone is a dual-track strategy that accurately reflects the current reality of the smartphone market and represents the most realistic choice for Samsung.”
