A Tragic Loss Demands Accountability

Yesterday afternoon, as snow began to fall in Swannanoa, North Carolina, a husband, wife, and their 18-month-old baby were finally given a glimmer of hope after enduring months in a tent on their property. Their home, destroyed by Hurricane Helene, left them with no shelter until a donated RV arrived to provide warmth and safety.

However, at 5 p.m., a repossession truck arrived, seizing the donated RV and leaving this family with no choice but to return to the freezing tent in the middle of a snowstorm. That night, temperatures plummeted, and this young couple woke to the unimaginable tragedy of their baby’s death from hypothermia.

To FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell, President Joe Biden, Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, and Governor Roy Cooper: the blood of this innocent child is on your hands. Your inaction, mismanagement, and negligence have directly contributed to this tragedy. You have failed the American people, and justice demands that you are held accountable.

This is not hearsay or exaggeration. Leaders from four collaborative organizations, along with a team from one of my own organizations, were there to witness and confirm this heartbreaking event.

🚨 The Pentagon Is Hiding U.S. Troops in Hotels and Apartment Buildings Because Iran Blew Up Our Bases — And That’s a War Crime

You’ve been told for weeks that we’re “crushing” Iran. Fox hosts preen. MAGA influencers chest-thump. Trump posts another all-caps declaration of total victory.

Meanwhile, in the real world, the Pentagon has been quietly evacuating its own bases across the Gulf — because Iranian missiles and drones turned them into smoldering parking lots — and scattering thousands of American troops into hotels, office buildings, and apartment complexes in civilian city centers.

Not because it’s tactically brilliant. Because it’s desperate.

🔥 The Reality the Propaganda Machine Won’t Tell You

The NYT finally reported what my Pentagon officials have been whispering for weeks:

- 13 major U.S. bases across the Gulf have been rendered “all but uninhabitable” by sustained Iranian ballistic missile and drone strikes

- At least a dozen U.S. service members killed at Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia and Al Udeid in Qatar alone

- 6 more killed at Port Shuaiba in Kuwait when a strike destroyed a tactical operations center

- Bases such as Ali Al Salem, Camp Bueding, and others have suffered extensive damage to aircraft, fuel depots, and communications infrastructure.

The response? Commanders didn’t reinforce the bases. They didn’t deploy better air defense. They fled into civilian populations.

Let that sink in. The most powerful military in human history — with a budget larger than the next ten nations combined — is now conducting combat operations from Holiday Inns and Marriotts because Iran’s cheap drones made our billion-dollar bases uninhabitable.

⚖️ This Is Literally a War Crime

Here’s where it gets legally catastrophic.

The Pentagon’s own Law of War Manual (updated 2023) explicitly states:

“Military commanders and other officials responsible for the safety of the civilian population must take reasonable steps to separate the civilian population from military objectives and to protect the civilian population from the effects of combat.”

Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions requires the same.

Amnesty International’s crisis researcher Brian Castner didn’t mince words:

“It is unconscionable that U.S. forces would knowingly put civilians at risk by leaving their bases and moving to hotels in the densely populated city centers. The commanders who ordered these relocations should be investigated for violating U.S. laws of war.”

Michael Schmitt, professor of international law at the U.S. Naval War College, confirmed it directly:

“Billeting troops in civilian structures in which there are civilians — as in a hotel that is still being used or an apartment building where civilians are still living — would be a violation of passive precautions.”

The legal distinction is critical: this isn’t like Ukrainian forces defending Mariupol with civilians present because Russian ground troops were actively assaulting the city. That’s a defensive necessity exception.

This is the opposite. U.S. forces aren’t defending those cities. They’re using civilians as cover to avoid getting hit by Iranian strikes — turning hotels and apartment buildings that would otherwise be unlawful targets into legitimate military objectives.

That’s not just a violation of “passive precautions.” One step further and you’re in human shields territory — which is explicitly classified as a war crime.

It is so blatant it appears to be someone at the Pentegon intentionally sabotaging this administration!

🤡 The Propaganda Gap Is a Chasm

Let’s compare the two narratives running simultaneously:

Retired Master Sergeant Wes J. Bryant, a Special Operations targeting specialist, put it bluntly:

“You can’t just put all that equipment on the top of a hotel. You’re absolutely going to lose capability.”

Kelly Grieco at the Stimson Center nailed the larger humiliation:

“This is the first war the United States is facing where we see the implications of democratized air power and the long-range persistent strikes from their adversary. And the lack of preparedness is not limited to this theater.”

Translation: cheap Iranian drones and missiles have neutralized the most expensive military infrastructure on Earth. The Pentagon had no backup plan. Now they’re committing war crimes out of sheer incompetence.

🎯 Iran’s Response Makes It Worse

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has publicly urged Gulf civilians to report U.S. troop locations:

“It is your Islamic duty to report the hiding places of American terrorists accurately.”

Iranian strikes have already killed civilians in the UAE, Bahrain, and Kuwait. The U.S. Embassy in Saudi Arabia issued a travel advisory warning Americans that “gathering areas” could be targeted.

Every hotel housing troops is now a legitimate military target under the laws of armed conflict — precisely because the Pentagon put them there. The civilians inside those hotels didn’t sign up for this. But they’ll pay the price when the next missile lands.

💀 The Bigger Picture

I'm sorry, but this is what happens when you start a war based on compromised intel from a country with an alterior motive and not being even remotely honest, and then proceeding with no coherent strategy, no congressional authorization, no honest explanation to the American people, and no plan for what happens when the other side shoots back.

Trump spent years promising to end endless wars. Instead, he assembled the largest U.S. military presence in the Middle East since the 2003 Iraq invasion — and launched a regime-change war against a nation of 93 million people that had exactly zero capability to strike the American homeland.

Now:

- American troops are dying on bases that were supposed to be secure

- Commanders are committing potential war crimes out of desperation

- Gulf civilians are being turned into human shields

- The Pentagon is quietly soliciting contracts for emergency bunkers — six weeks into a war they started on their own terms

- And the propaganda machine keeps telling you we’re winning

Glenn Greenwald has been documenting this disaster from the beginning. The war was never explained. The objectives keep shifting. Trump now openly admits it’s a regime-change operation with no time limits — followed by nation-building, exactly what he campaigned against.

And the American people? They’re paying for it. The Congressional GOP wants at minimum $50 billion just for the opening weeks. Gas prices spike. Markets tremble.
