Calling for reform of the front end of driving education/assessment to include ethics of driving ...Yeah, I have insurance. Freelance Management Consultant.
It has occurred to me that the big thing missing from the driving test/education is all about the ethics of driving. Thinking about why YOU need to, why OTHERS need to and how you should interact on a philosophical/psychological level with other road users.
@MitchBenn It’s his original Hofner he had in Hamburg and used on the first few singles, he has a ‘63 that became his main bass after that and the original was its backup until it was stolen.
So in other words Sunak wants drivers in London to have the right to get to their destinations about 2 minutes faster (on average) while significantly increasing the risk of death or serious injury to you and your families.
● if a pedestrian is hit by a vehicle at 20 mph there is a 2.5% chance they'll die
● if a pedestrian is hit by a vehicle at 30mph there's a 20% chance they'll die
So Sunak is literally blocking councils in their attempts to save lives and stop serious accidents
Todays tip:
Stop driving with main beam on on the motorway during darkness when cars are in front of you and coming towards you on the opposite carriageway!
Stop relying on technology.
You the driver are responsible.
You risk everyone’s #RoadSafety
Pollution from cars and vans costs £6 billion per year in health damages.
Swapping 1 in 4 car journeys in urban areas for walking or cycling could save over £1.1 billion in health damage costs per year.
Switching 1 million cars from diesel to electric would save more than £360 million per year in health costs from local air pollution.
Perhaps someone could send @rishisunak a copy of @globalactplan’s report? https://t.co/8prDj5QakU #airpollution #ULEZ #ULEZexpansion
To add - we have to be careful with the word ‘guess’ here. One could argue that a scientific theory is a guess, and indeed in the Feynman Lectures, Feynman uses that terminology. But even then, he quickly goes on to say that you have to follow this up by working out the consequences of your guess and doing a lot of work to subject those consequences to scrutiny. And, crucially, you must understand that your guess really is a guess and you must be ready to discard it if it’s not compatible with data.
It’s not too hard, but let’s spell it out! Science is a satisfactory philosophy of ignorance. One starts in a position of not knowing and being comfortable and indeed delighted and excited in not knowing. One then starts to investigate - do experiments or observe Nature. The key is not to get into an entrenched position and instead to allow your knowledge to develop as new data and understanding emerge. If you truly don’t have the data or understanding to come to an informed view, then the advice is not to guess and loudly proclaim your guess to the world but to shut up and do some work. A little northern in phrasing perhaps, but I am from Oldham.
Let’s use the tweet below to explain something about why science is successful and politics today is largely dysfunctional. The person to which Jim responded asks for an apology if new data or evidence is presented which causes someone to change their view. Why? The process of updating ones view as new information or knowledge is acquired is central to science, and by extension to our rational understanding of the world. Demanding an apology from someone who engages in this vital activity is tantamount to demanding an apology for the enlightenment. Essentially, it represents the view that it is a personal insult to disagree over the interpretation of data. Nature, however, doesn’t care about your feelings and if it turns out that your opinion is wrong, no apology is necessary and indeed celebration is in order because you’ve learnt something new about Nature.
What bad urban leadership looks like. Anyone who truly understands how cities actually work, and why they succeed or fail, knows that this isn’t “motorists vs everyone else.” Designing cities for cars fails for everyone, including drivers.
This doesn’t bode well for UK cities.
