As the incoming Coordinator of the National Preventative Mechanism (‘NPM’) we briefed the delegation at the start of their visit, highlighting our areas of concern. We are now the last country in Europe to ratify OPCAT- unacceptable, given our poor history of places of detention.
Ratifying #OPCAT is more important than ever with severe prison overcrowding - it would help to ensure that preventative measures are put in place before we reach crisis point.
We are now the outlier. The Govt needs to pass the Inspection of Places of Detention Bill urgently
Any reduction in legal costs would make the system better for the litigant but “might not be regarded as being in the interests of the legal profession”

This comprehensive @OIP_Ireland report is a sobering read. It paints a stark picture of the high level of mental health needs of people in overcrowded prisons without adequate access to the medical and therapeutic supports they require. It makes clear recommendations for action
Four years since the Kelly review made recommendations for tackling legal costs, the “millionaire rates” continue to be the “going rates”
