Carel Schoeman, 35, an attorney from Heidelberg who is accused of purchasing a girl, 13, for R160,000 ($8,000) and regularly raping her while treating her as his sex slave, appeared in the Gauteng High Court on 30 October 2024. He has been charged with 26 counts, including four allegations of rape, child exploitation, human trafficking, abduction, child abuse, and utilising the services of trafficked victims. He also allegedly filmed the sexual acts.

Following his arrest in 2023, Carel was granted bail of R30,000. Despite his horrific charges, he remains out on bail and continues practising as an attorney.

The girl's mother, 38, whose identity cannot be revealed to protect her children, allegedly sold her daughter, 13, to Carel. He allegedly made his first booking with the girl in September 2022. Between September and November, he allegedly made several more bookings until December 2022, when he was accused of approaching the mother to "buy" the girl. According to the indictment, the mother advertised the "sexual services" of her two daughters on adult websites.

The mother would then allegedly force her daughters, 11 and 13 years old at the time, to have sex with around ten "clients" a day at various guesthouses around Boksburg, Heidelberg and Springs in exchange for money. It is alleged that the younger daughter was also taken to Amanzimtoti and Ramsgate in KwaZulu-Natal, where several clients raped her.

The mother faces 72 counts, including kidnapping, sexually exploiting children, human trafficking, rape, kidnapping, child abuse, and the creation of child pornographic content. She pleaded not guilty to the charges against her.

The Legal Practice Council (LPC) confirmed to the media that Carel is a registered attorney still practising. Additionally, the LPC stated they had no record of a criminal case against Carel but would look into the matter. Following his arrest in 2023, Carel was granted bail of R30,000. He pleaded not guilty to the horrific accusations brought against him.
