On this day (12 August) in 2009, assassinated politician and civil rights leader Harvey Milk was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the US’s highest civilian honour, by Barack Obama.

The award was accepted by Stuart Milk, Harvey Milk’s nephew and LGBTQ+ activist, on his behalf.

Milk, who was gay, made political waves during the 70s and became the first out gay man to be elected to public office in California, serving as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1978.

He had been in office for less than a year when he was assassinated alongside Mayor George Moscone by Dan White, a former supervisor who cast the sole vote against Milk's bill banning discrimination based on sexual orientation in public accommodations, housing, and employment.
