Finally Texas is getting a true national golf destination!
Wild Spring Dunes is a brand new golf resort, brought to you by Mike Keiser Jr., son of Bandon Dunes founder Mike Keiser. The first golf course, by Tom Doak, has been open to founding members and will open to the public September 8th.
The big question: How is the golf?
The land is wild and sandy. It could be in North Carolina, this doesn’t feel like Texas golf. The golf course is cut through a forest full of beautiful pines and natural springs form ravines to add to the natural land variety. The elevation change is excellent, constant movement means almost no flat golf holes.
The fairways are wide and playable, which is important given the harsh scrub that surrounds the fairways. You are given ample landing room, but misses won’t be treated well.
The Doak trademarks are here. The greens are all super contoured and interesting, just because you hit a green doesn’t mean you will be staying there. The tee shots are strategic, you get wide safe landing areas but the ideal line will always require boldness from the player.
There is great mix of short and long holes. The par 3’s ranged from 115 yards to 240 yards! There are some great short par 4’s where you get to really test the modern strategy of hitting driver as far as possible versus laying back for angles or safer landing spots.
Aesthetically the golf course is gorgeous, it’s a nature walk. You get some great views of other golf holes and players, but you also get the tranquility of being out in the forest.
The course is walking only outside of the summer, which should keep the wonderful Zoysia turf in great condition. In the summer you will be able to take carts, a necessary concession in the brutal East Texas heat. Caddies will help you with the journey and are highly recommended! The service is top notch, the staff all super friendly and helpful.
Wild Spring Dunes is awesome and a great start to one of the biggest golf developments in the country. More golf courses, lodging, housing, restaurants…the next decade is going to be fun!
