Once you meet Nicholas Vargo, you'll never forget him: Movie buff, “Redbox man”, and a good man simply looking to be surprised. I’m not perfect but who is?
@moonwatcher1@jeb91380 The irony is the full trailer sold it exactly the way you suggested it, and while I love the movie as is, it would’ve been even funnier that way. The baby leaves on his own, the parents offer a reward, and the three crooks try and repeatedly fail to get the baby. Way better.
@MrAlanSpencer Took your advice on In God We Trust. It really is terrific, and so is your commentary (As a San Diego native, it’s interesting to know that Downtown doubles nicely for Hollywood Blvd when Ambrose first comes to L.A.). The performances are spectacular!
@joe_dante I was six and it was on HBO. I had stumbled across it, as the first scene I ever saw was the one where the register rang up all the wrong prices for Kathleen Freeman and knew I had to see the rest of it. It’s one of your very best, and I hope one day I can see it on 35mm film.
@joe_dante@renfieldprods Hollywood Blvd. is so good! Even with the things it probably couldn’t get away with now (like the attempted rape at the drive-in), it’s also so entertaining that you can let it slide. Plus Mary Woronov is stunning here, as she give a genius performance as Mary McQueen!
@Todd_Spence Brazil, because it has the most buzz plus if I had been alive and alert, I would’ve probably have seen Time Bandits beforehand and would have been willing to watch anything Terry Gilliam made next.
@CerealMidnight I’ve got two:
Tom Schiller’s Nothing Lasts Forever from 1984 featuring Zach Galligan, Bill Murray, and Dan Aykroyd. A criminally underseen movie just waiting to be discovered.
Hannah Leder and Alexandra Kotcheff’s The Planters from 2020. DIY filmmaking at its finest!
@AdrianKRosas @MrBubbles89@CerealMidnight I found a Redbox that still had it recently and rented it out for the maximum rental period so I could keep it. Set me back over $40 but it was totally worth it. It’s really awful how Disney/20th Century treated this one as it’s highly underrated and deserves a Blu-Ray release.
@joe_dante@renfieldprods Love this movie! Played it last night as part of my midnight movies at home series for its 30th Anniversary. I wish I had seen it in theatres but I’m so happy I found it in the intervening years because it’s the perfect love letter to the movies. It’s your definitive masterpiece!
@tvaziri Shame. Confess, Fletch is a very funny movie. I saw it on Showtime and it was worth the wait. It’s just as good as the Chevy Chase original and a lot of that is attributed to both Greg Motolla’s writing and direction and Jon Hamm’s performance. Glad it’s finally coming!
