Home-grown is where the heart is. Everton fans are absolutely right to be angered by the possibility of the 19-year-old midfielder Harrison Armstrong being sold to Nottingham Forest for £40m. Selling academy talent for what seems like a substantial fee to help the SCR pot and/or the simple pure-profit hit can often be a false economy (look at Elliot Anderson, another clever Forest signing, Newcastle were in a bind but why sell him?).

Selling local heroes infuriates fans and frustrates managers like David Moyes, who clearly rates Armstrong. Such an experienced, respected manager, who cares deeply about the club, deserves to be listened to by owners. Selling players like Armstrong diminishes the team. It strengthens a mid-table rival.

It makes the owners, the Friedkins, seem interested only in business not sport. It casts an unnecessary cloud over the season, dampening the mood. Having “one of our own” matters. And, at his current rate of development, including another good display against Bournemouth, lauded on club social media, Armstrong will be worth even more than £40m in a year’s time, especially in this inflated market. Seller beware.#EFC
